{"68826":{"#nid":"68826","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Freshmen Make First Memories at the Last Frontier","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EMost students\u2019 earliest memories of college life involve a\ndining hall meal or an awkward first club meeting, but on Wednesday, 19\nincoming freshmen left to make some of their first memories as newly-enrolled Tech\nstudents in the far-flung state of Alaska. This Tech Treks trip, coordinated by\nthe Campus Recreation Center (CRC) and FASET, will have travelers hike, climb\nglaciers, camp, fish and explore the Alaskan wilderness, paralleling the challenges\nthey encounter there with those they will soon find in college.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ESara Warner, the CRC\u2019s assistant director for\ncommunications, said the number of students participating in this trip has\nnearly doubled since last year, and that the trip is as much about getting to\nknow other freshman and making friends at Tech as it is getting to explore\nAlaska. A second Tech Treks group will take a rafting trip in the southeast for\nthose who might prefer a less remote destination.\n\n\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe CRC offers travel opportunities throughout the school\nyear, to locations both domestic and international. As part of its China summer\nprogram, a group of students participated in a weeklong leadership and\nadventure trip earlier this summer where they hiked undeveloped parts of the\nGreat Wall. Other groups have scuba dived in Cozumel, Mexico, during spring\nbreak or skied in Breckenridge, Colo., during winter break. Students, faculty\nand staff are all welcome on the CRC\u2019s trips, many of which are organized and\nled by Outdoor Recreation Georgia Tech (ORGT). \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWe work with travel agents to make the packages something\nworthwhile on all trips, and definitely make sure it\u2019s cheap enough that\nstudents want to do it,\u201d Warner said.
