Van der Waals heterostructures provide a versatile platform to realize novel electronic states such as superconductivity and quantum anomalous Hall phases. Yet key questions remain about how collective excitations—such as isospin fluctuations—influence emergent phenomena like superconductivity and drive the collapse of topological gaps. Addressing this requires probing the terahertz frequency range where these modes are active.

In this talk, I will introduce on-chip terahertz time-domain spectroscopy for dual-gated heterostructures, where metallic gates essential for electrostatic tuning typically obscure the electromagnetic response. I will discuss our approach to overcome this challenge, enabling simultaneous THz and transport measurements on the same device. Using this platform, I will present correlated spectroscopic and transport data from bilayer graphene heterostructures. Finally, I will discuss challenges in interpreting time-domain signatures in strongly correlated systems and outline how integrated multi-modal techniques can advance our understanding of quantum materials.

Bio: Dr. Abhay Nayak is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Georgia State University (since 2025), following postdoctoral research work at UC Santa Barbara. His research centers around two-dimensional materials and van der Waals heterostructures, using advanced spectroscopic tools including on-chip terahertz time-domain spectroscopy to probe electron collective dynamics in tunable devices. Hie efforts aim to establish novel experimental tools to probe phenomena in quantum materials underpinning future technologies.

In this talk, I will introduce on-chip terahertz time-domain spectroscopy for dual-gated heterostructures, where metallic gates essential for electrostatic tuning typically obscure the electromagnetic response.
