Art and Generative AI Course Connects Georgia Tech Students with Atlanta Artists

A new community-based learning initiative at Georgia Institute of Technology is integrating artistic practice into engineering education through CEE 4803: Art and Generative AI, led by Francesco Fedele, associate professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Supported by Georgia Tech’s Transformative Teaching and Learning Innovation Incubator, the course brings together students and community artists from three Atlanta arts organizations — Fly on a Wall, The Pollinator Art Space, and Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. Artists co-teach alongside faculty, leading hands-on studios in drawing, painting, collage, movement, and other creative practices alongside instruction in artificial intelligence fundamentals.

The course culminates in AnthropogenIc, a student exhibition featuring AI-generated artworks created using original data and custom-built algorithms. The exhibition emphasizes student authorship and human agency in human–machine collaboration.
