Long, Professor and Chair of the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, "emphasizes opportunities for the U.S. to assume a leadership role in global public health."

The Mekong Basin, the Middle East, and East Africa are Long's focus in this book, as they serve as examples of areas that have seen countries cooperate to fight against pandemics despite volatile regional tensions.  He also "explores how public-private networks deliver public health services in violence-prone locations".
