This year, Martin\nLuther King, Jr.,\u2019s\u003Cem\u003E \u003C\/em\u003E\u201cI Have a Dream:\nWritings and Speeches That Changed the World\u201d was chosen in conjunction with\nthe celebration of the 50th anniversary of the matriculation of black students\nat Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cFreshman or common reading programs exist at many\ncolleges and universities, and most share similar goals of enhancing students\u2019\nacademic engagement and fostering a shared learning experience,\u201d said Steven\nGirardot, director of the Center for Academic Success. Tech has offered such a\nprogram on and off for many years, most recently restarting it in 2009. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003EWith this year\u2019s reading, \u201cthe hope is to challenge\nfreshmen to think about how they want to \u2018change the world\u2019 and how their Tech\neducation will help them on the path to doing that,\u201d Girardot said. Faculty and\nstaff are encouraged to read along with new students as well. \u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cIf faculty,\nstaff or other students read this book with the incoming class, they would\ndefinitely be more adept at relating to our situations at having to face an\nuncertain time coming into college, at a time when we are deciding what to\npursue, and how to spend the rest of our lives,\u201d said Shinjini Das, a second-year\nindustrial and systems engineering major who participated in last year\u2019s\nreading of Warren St. John\u2019s \u201cOutcasts United.\u201d Das believes this year\u2019s choice of literature is apt to motivate and\ninspire new students. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cIt is\nabsolutely important to instill the idea of initiating positive change on\ncampus and in the world from as early as freshman year,\u201d she said. \u201cIn this\nway, students have goal-oriented mindsets and are intent on revitalizing campus\nlife. No matter age, freshmen are an integral part of Georgia Tech, and their\nfresh perspectives bring so much to the table.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ESome GT 1000 and Literature, Communication and Culture\nclasses will use the book in classes during the fall, with academic analysis\npunctuated by relevant social events throughout the semester.
