In this lecture entitled "The Surprising Expansion History of the Universe," Dr. Adam Riess will detail the discovery that the universe's expansion is accelerating, not slowing down as previously expected.

Adam Riess is a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at Johns Hopkins University, a distinguished astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He was awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics, the Breakthrough Prize in Physics, Einstein Medal, Gruber and Shaw Prizes, and a MacArthur “Genius” Grant for his leadership in the High-z Supernova Search Team’s discovery that the expansion rate of the universe is accelerating. He currently leads the SHOES Team in efforts to improve the measurement of the Hubble constant and the Higher-z Team to find and measure the most distant type Ia supernovae known, to probe the origin of cosmic acceleration.
