Groups should form to discuss Committee Missions and Activities (40 minutes)

1. Brainstorm in small groups about planning for the term: what activities would you like your committee to undertake? Each member should share her ideas.
2. Identify the three most interesting ideas that emerge from the group brainstorming; choose which opportunities are worth pursuing at this time
3. Identify the action items involved with planning these activities: what steps do individual members need to take to realize the top three opportunities? Who will take responsibility for developing these?
4. Share your group’s ideas about activities with the larger group.
5. Email committee chair, members, and plans to Allie Riggs (ariggs8@gatech.edu)          

WST Learning Community Student Committees

Each committee should select a chairperson to represent its views and decisions. Email the names of the chairs and members to Allie Riggs. The list will be posted in the group Canvas site.

• Communications and Recruitment Committee (CRC)
  Responsibility: Invite WST Lrn current and prospective residents to participate in events and initiatives. Help recruit new residents.
• Kitchen and Sustainability Committee (KSC)
  Responsibilities: Develop and monitor kitchen practices and encourage students to keep the kitchens neat. Communicate kitchen needs to WST co-director Carol Colatrella and to Hall Council.
• Study and Service Committee (SSC)
  Responsibilities: Develop and/or implement scientific and technical hands-on activities for after school Girls Excelling in Math and Science (GEMS) clubs, sponsored by WST on most Tuesdays, 4-5:30pm, 551 John Wesley Dobbs Ave. NE, Atlanta, GA 30312. Members also plan additional service and study-related events of their choice.
• Working Women and Community Leaders Committee (WWC)
  Responsibility: Work with the WST co-director, graduate partners, and RAs to plan dinner and other programs.

Girls Excelling in Math and Science Club, Howard Middle School

The WST Learning Community service project is the David T. Howard Middle School's Girls Excelling in Math and Science (GEMS) club. This weekly after-school club welcomes girls interested in interactive science and engineering activities.  David T. Howard Middle School is an Atlanta Public School located at 551 John Wesley Dobbs Ave. NE, Atlanta, GA 30312. The group meets every Tuesday from 4-5:30 p.m. Other sponsors for GEMS include the American Society for Mechanical Engineers and the Howard Middle School PTA.  For more information about GEMS and how to meet with the club, contact Dr. Realff or Haley Carroll (hcarroll30@gatech.edu)
