{"683533":{"#nid":"683533","#data":{"type":"news","title":"A New Look for Writing and Communication at Georgia Tech ","body":[{"value":"\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech\u2019s writing program has a fresh look this Fall.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003ETo better serve the needs of the Georgia Tech community, the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/wcprogram.lmc.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EWriting and Communication Program\u003C\/a\u003E (WCP), in partnership with the School of Literature, Media, and Communication (LMC) and the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, is broadening the mission of the Naugle Communication Center and changing the program\u2019s organizational structure.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe communication center will now be known as the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/wcprogram.lmc.gatech.edu\/communication-center\u0022\u003ENaugle Writing and Communication Center\u003C\/a\u003E and expand its services to faculty and staff, in addition to its traditional student audience.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe program will also now function as its own department within \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/lmc.gatech.edu\u0022\u003ELMC \u003C\/a\u003E\u2014 highlighting the crucial role of writing and communication in educating tomorrow\u2019s leaders.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EWhile the program will retain its academic ties to the School, it will now report directly to the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts\u2019 dean\u2019s office on administrative and operational matters, such as faculty affairs, finance, human resources, facilities, and information technology.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe program will also gradually transition several Marion L. Brittain Postdoctoral Fellow positions to full-time lecturer positions. That change should help improve continuity and provide for better mentorship opportunities, said \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/iac.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/f7a0b486-5836-5882-ae6c-e02584ad3d5d\u0022\u003EMelissa Ianetta\u003C\/a\u003E, Class of 1958 Professor in Communication and executive director of writing and communication.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThese changes reflect our commitment to fostering a culture of strong communication across the Institute, affirm the vital role of writing and communication in the liberal arts, and position the program to further contribute to College and Institute-wide initiatives,\u201d Ianetta said.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe Writing and Communication Program offers courses, faculty training, and support services to help members of the Georgia Tech community communicate clearly and effectively in any setting. It is also the home of approximately 45 Marion L. Brittain Postdoctoral Fellows \u2014 instructors who teach many of the first-year writing courses at Georgia Tech.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.communicationcenter.gatech.edu\/\u0022 rel=\u0022noreferrer noopener\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ECommunication Center\u003C\/a\u003E provides drop-in support for students \u2014 and now faculty and staff \u2014 seeking to improve their writing, polish presentations, or learn ways to ease the anxiety of public speaking engagements.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003ELMC Chair Kelly Ritter said the changes will help elevate the profile of writing instruction at Georgia Tech at a crucial time, with students and faculty alike navigating with the promise and peril of communicating in the age of AI.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThis transition will bring greater attention to writing research and pedagogy in the WCP as it benefits students of all majors at the Institute, and also faculty teaching writing in their own courses,\u201d \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/iac.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/871864cc-b76a-579e-8e68-5c0ae1042115\u0022\u003ERitter \u003C\/a\u003Esaid. \u201cIt also will allow the expert faculty in the WCP a stronger collective voice in shared governance, including the advent of any future initiatives to help sustain and grow writing-related efforts across campus.\u201d\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe changes follow an update to the program\u2019s curriculum for first-year students rolled out last year.
