{"683519":{"#nid":"683519","#data":{"type":"news","title":"How a Postdoctoral Fellow Is Advancing Student Learning at Georgia Tech  ","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EHyeyeon Lee, a postdoctoral fellow in Georgia Tech\u2019s Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), is helping shape teaching practices and enhance student learning across campus.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EBefore coming to Tech, Lee spent four years as a graduate research assistant at Penn State\u2019s Teaching with Technology Center, where she supported faculty in using active learning strategies to engage students in technology-enhanced classrooms.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThat experience led her to Tech\u2019s Department of Biomedical Engineering, where she explored the use of \u201cstory-driven learning interventions\u201d to foster engineering students\u2019 entrepreneurial mindset. Her work at BME focused on support for instructors by developing pedagogical guidelines for implementing story-driven learning interventions.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003ENow at CTL, Lee draws on both experiences to translate educational research into classroom practice. She also prepares workshops offered to instructors and teaching assistants that promote effective teaching practices and meaningful learning throughout the semester.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Ch2\u003EHelping Students Navigate Digital Learning Challenges\u003C\/h2\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EBeyond her support for faculty and students, Lee has led a research program grounded in her academic background of Educational Psychology, with a focus on helping students become better self-regulated learners in a digital world. \u201cIn today\u2019s world, we rely heavily on the internet for everyday life and academic tasks. However, the overwhelming amount of information presents significant challenges in making sense of it,\u201d said Lee.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EDetermining which sources are useful, credible, and necessary for completing assignments is often a complex task. For Lee, these challenges highlight the importance of self-regulated learning and metacognition, that is, students\u2019 ability to plan, process, monitor, and adapt their learning processes.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cI am passionate about studying these self-regulated learning processes to help others effectively access and use online resources,\u201d said Lee. \u201cI believe these are essential skills in the digital age, especially as generative AI becomes increasingly integrated into how we interact with information.\u201d\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003ELee\u2019s research has been published in leading educational psychology and technology journals, such as \u003Cem\u003EContemporary Educational Psychology\u003C\/em\u003E, \u003Cem\u003ELearning and Individual Differences\u003C\/em\u003E, and \u003Cem\u003EEducational Technology Research and Development. \u003C\/em\u003E\u201cI always make sure to block dedicated time each day for writing\u2014especially when working on manuscripts intended for peer-reviewed publications,\u201d Lee said.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Ch2\u003EResearch that Enhances Student Well-Being Through Collaboration\u003C\/h2\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFor Lee, supporting students goes beyond academic success\u2014it means caring deeply about their mental health and well-being. \u201cThrough my graduate school experience, I have seen many students struggle with anxiety and depression, which significantly affect their academic performance and quality of life,\u201d Lee explains. \u201cThat\u2019s why I aim to better understand mental well-being and the psychological mechanisms behind these challenges. Fortunately, I had a collaborator who was studying this topic during my time as a graduate student, which gave me an opportunity to engage in mental health research and deepen my understanding through collaboration.\u201d\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Ch2\u003EFencing, Food, and Finding Balance\u003C\/h2\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EOutside of work, Lee makes time for balance and fun. She enjoys at-home workouts, fencing club, and discovering new restaurants on the weekend.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThere are so many great options here, so I don\u2019t stick to just one spot,\u201d said Lee. \u201cMy favorite place in Atlanta is Buckhead.
