However, compared to atomic layer deposition (ALD), its parent process, VPI does not have a thorough list of available precursor-polymer combinations, nor are there standardized practices to test the success of these processes in the literature nor a good understanding of how to predict which precursor-polymer couples will work well for VPI. This work will fill in the gaps in information first by performing over 45 different precursor-polymer VPI combinations and assessing the degree to which these polymers are infiltrated.

The second part of this thesis research will go into a deep dive of a few of these processes, investigating any apparent incongruencies within and between systems. Two systems will be studied: the first system is the infiltration of diethylzinc (DEZ), a zinc oxide precursor, in polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), which was claimed to be unsuccessful in the literature. The second system to be studied will be the infiltration of titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4), a titanium oxide precursor, in poly-2-vinylpyridine (P2VP) and poly-4-vinylpyridine (P4VP) as well as DEZ in P2VP and P4VP, as the infiltration success varies between these two precursors. The greater goal of this proposal is to provide a resource which VPI researchers can rely on to further understand the fundamentals of VPI and predict the behavior of other precursor-polymer systems.

Committee:

Dr. Mark Losego - School of Materials Science and Engineering (advisor)

Dr. Antonio Facchetti - School of Materials Science and Engineering

Dr. Shucong Li - School of Materials Science and Engineering

Dr. Seung Soon Jang - School of Materials Science and Engineering

Dr. Ryan Lively – School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
