But a recent experience humbled me. I took an open-source critical thinking test and didn\u2019t do nearly as well as I expected.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThis led me down a deeper path of inquiry. I was already concerned about how two decades of social media have shaped the way we consume and respond to information\u2014short, sensational content delivered by algorithm. And now, with the rapid rise of generative AI, I worry we may be trading our thinking for speed and scale.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EI use AI tools daily, and I advocate for their use\u2014especially in supply chain applications. \u003Cstrong\u003EBut I\u2019ve also come to believe this: if we\u2019re not careful, we risk outsourcing the very thinking that makes us human and effective decision-makers\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhy Critical Thinking Matters More Than Ever\u2014Especially in Supply Chain\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ECritical thinking isn\u2019t just a defense mechanism\u2014it\u2019s a differentiator\u003C\/strong\u003E. In a world where AI can generate answers instantly, the professionals who ask the right questions will stand out.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESupply chain professionals operate in environments where \u003Cstrong\u003Esecond and third-order consequences matter\u003C\/strong\u003E. We are called on to make decisions under uncertainty, weigh risks, balance competing priorities, and understand interdependencies.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EJudgment\u2014tempered by experience, structured analysis, and humility\u2014is the edge\u003C\/strong\u003E. Tools can help you scale, but they cannot replace the human responsibility to challenge, reflect, and adjust.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EWhat Is Critical Thinking?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\u003Cp\u003ECritical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally about what to do or believe. It involves:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EQuestioning assumptions\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EEvaluating evidence\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003ERecognizing biases (ours and others\u2019)\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EDrawing reasoned conclusions\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EReflecting on one\u2019s own thought process\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESaid simply, it\u2019s self-awareness of your thinking style\u2014how you form your views, test them, and revise them when new evidence emerges\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIt requires effort. It requires slowing down. It requires, at times, being wrong.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EFacione, in his \u003Cem\u003EDelphi \u003C\/em\u003EReport, defines it as \u0022\u003Cstrong\u003Epurposeful, self-regulatory judgment\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EKahneman reminds us that our brains are wired for shortcuts\u003C\/strong\u003E\u2014\u201cSystem 1\u201d thinking is fast and efficient but often error-prone. True critical thinking requires \u201cSystem 2\u201d effort: slow, reflective, and disciplined.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAre We Losing It?\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThere\u2019s growing evidence we are.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESocial media echo chambers reduce exposure to opposing views. Short-form content conditions us to expect fast answers. And according to the \u003Cstrong\u003EMIT Media Lab (Kosmyna et al., 2024)\u003C\/strong\u003E, students using ChatGPT retained less, showed reduced cognitive effort, and had lower originality.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201c\u003Cstrong\u003EWhen ChatGPT was used, cognitive effort declined\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAnd yet\u2014\u003Cstrong\u003Ethis is not a moment for despair\u003C\/strong\u003E. It\u2019s a call to discipline. Because critical thinking, practiced intentionally, can become a \u003Cstrong\u003Epersonal and professional superpower\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EApplying Critical Thinking in Supply Chain Decisions\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESupply chain professionals face complexity daily\u2014inventory tradeoffs, supplier uncertainty, resource constraints, policy risk. \u003Cstrong\u003EMany of these decisions can\u2019t be answered by tools alone\u2014they require judgment. Critical thinking lives in that judgment.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EWhether you\u0027re building a forecast, evaluating a supplier, responding to a disruption, or modeling risk exposure, structured thinking provides a path. The steps are familiar:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EDefine the problem clearly\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EClarify what information is available\u2014and what\u2019s missing\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EAnalyze root causes or future implications\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EGenerate multiple options\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EEstablish decision criteria\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EChoose a path\u2014and test it before launch\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EMonitor and adjust as feedback arrives\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThis process resembles A3 thinking or supply chain analytics. But \u003Cstrong\u003Ewhat makes it powerful is doing it intentionally\u2014even under pressure\u003C\/strong\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EThe best professionals I\u2019ve worked with practice it on small decisions as well as large ones\u003C\/strong\u003E. They don\u2019t confuse speed with clarity.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EPracticing Critical Thinking When Using Generative AI\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAI tools are powerful\u2014but without deliberate use, they can dull our thinking. Here\u0027s how to \u003Cstrong\u003Emake AI work with your brain\u2014not instead of it\u003C\/strong\u003E:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EDocument your assumptions before prompting\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EJournal your intent: What are you trying to decide or explore?\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EAsk AI to provide counterarguments or alternative views as well as sources for you to research and draw your own conclusions\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003ELook for what\u2019s missing or oversimplified\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003ESummarize AI output in your own words\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003ETrack and reflect on how AI influenced your decisions\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ETreat AI like a research assistant\u2014not a strategist\u003C\/strong\u003E. Use it to extend your reach, not replace your reasoning.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EFinal Thought and Your Next Steps\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ECritical thinking is no longer optional\u003C\/strong\u003E. Not in business. Not in education. Not in leadership.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIt is a skill. A discipline. And a mindset that pays dividends over a lifetime.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIf you\u2019ve read this far, take this challenge seriously:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Col\u003E\u003Cli\u003EWrite out how you form your opinions\u2014on paper.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EPractice structured thinking on small problems weekly.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EUse AI with intention\u2014never outsource your judgment.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003ETeach someone else how you reached a conclusion.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EBe humble. Ask yourself: what if I\u2019m wrong?\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EKeep a thinking journal for 30 days.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ol\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe goal isn\u2019t to be right all the time. It\u2019s to be reflective, rigorous, open to challenge, and consistent over time. That\u2019s what the world needs more of.
