]]> The objective of the presented research is to analyze and develop techniques that contribute to modern data centers in taking action in order to slow down the growth of their carbon footprint and reduce both, the operational carbon footprint of their processing, and their embodied carbon footprint by extending the lifetimes of their existing systems. The carbon footprint of information and communication technologies represents a threat to the environmental well-being. Modern data-centers constitute a significant and rapidly growing proportion of the total global carbon footprint. Measures to mitigate this carbon footprint growth must be developed. This work aims to contribute in directing efforts towards this purpose by making the following contributions: • Quantifying the Operational Carbon Footprint reduction of spatial splitting. • Developing techniques for extending the lifetime of old systems by extending these systems in order to reduce the Embodied Carbon Footprint. • Analyzing cluster resource management and its impact on sustainability and efficient computing.
