AI-ALOE Webinar: The Intertwined Histories of Artificial Intelligence and Education

Speaker:

Shayan Doroudi
Assistant Professor, School of Education
University of California, Irvine

Event Overview

The rapid rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in 2022 sparked widespread discussion about its impact on education. Many conversations framed AI in education solely through the lens of generative AI, overlooking AI’s longstanding role in shaping learning and teaching.

In this webinar, Shayan Doroudi will explore the deep historical connections between AI and education, tracing their intertwined development from the earliest days of AI research. He will examine three distinct approaches to AI—the Neat, the Scruffy, and the Connectionist—that not only represent different methodologies for building AI but also reflect unique educational philosophies. Despite their differences, these approaches share a common foundation: a focus on understanding learning in both humans and machines. Doroudi will discuss how this perspective has faded in contemporary AI and education research and will offer insights on how these historical strands can inform current discussions about the role of generative AI in education.

About the Speaker

Shayan Doroudi is an assistant professor in the School of Education at the University of California, Irvine, where he leads the Mathe Lab. His research sits at the intersection of the learning sciences, educational technology, and educational data science. In addition to exploring AI as a practical tool to enhance education, he is particularly interested in the theoretical connections between AI and education as fields that both seek to understand learning and knowledge.

Doroudi holds a B.S. in computer science from the California Institute of Technology and an M.S. and Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University.

Who Should Attend

This webinar is open to educators, researchers, policymakers, and anyone interested in the evolving relationship between AI and education.

Register now!
