With trapped atomic and molecular ions I study fundamental symmetries as well as explore new opportunities for optical clocks and quantum information science.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EI received my bachelor\u2019s degree from Harvard and my PhD from Yale, advised by \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/harrislab.yale.edu\/\u0022 rel=\u0022noopener noreferrer\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EJack Harris\u003C\/a\u003E. Following my PhD I did a postdoc for \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/campbellgroup.physics.ucla.edu\/\u0022 rel=\u0022noopener noreferrer\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EWes Campbell\u003C\/a\u003E, where we laser cooled and trapped atoms with an optical frequency comb.\u003C\/p\u003E","summary":"","format":"limited_html"}],"field_subtitle":"","field_summary":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003ETo realize optical clocks on many satellites\u003Cbr\u003Ewe must have low-power, small, and robust systems - not bespoke devices,\u003Cbr\u003Eotherwise the cost would be astronomical. To meet these demands a trapped ion\u003Cbr\u003Eclock with integrated photonics is very appealing. We aim to lower\u003Cbr\u003Ethe requirements for integrated photonics by using transitions in the radium\u003Cbr\u003Eion that only require IR light. \u0026nbsp;This heavy metal at the bottom of the periodic table as appealing properties that are often overlooked. \u0026nbsp;We are using radium-225 which has the necessary nuclear spin for such a clock. \u0026nbsp;We\u0027ve laser cooled this isotope and measured the ion\u2019s hyperfine structure. \u0026nbsp;Despite radium-225\u2019s short 15 day half-life we have\u003Cbr\u003Edemonstrated an atomic source that is compatible with decades of continuous operation in space.
