{"680040":{"#nid":"680040","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Annual Computational Linguistics Competition Sees Growing Participation","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe School of Modern Languages recently hosted the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sites.gatech.edu\/naclo\/\u0022\u003E19th North American Computational Linguistics Open (NACLO) Competition\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;This marks the fourth year Georgia Tech has served as a university site for the national event, which challenges middle and high school students to solve complex linguistics puzzles in a competitive setting, according to co-organizers \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/iac.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/hongchen-wu\u0022\u003EHongchen Wu\u003C\/a\u003E and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/modlangs.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/kyoko-masuda\u0022\u003EKyoko Masuda\u003C\/a\u003E, both faculty members in the School.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe linguistics puzzles in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/naclo.org\/\u0022\u003ENACLO competition\u003C\/a\u003E ranged from deciphering an ancient script to deducing the logical patterns of Swahili or Hawaiian, providing students with an opportunity to refine their analytical skills, deepen their scientific knowledge, and gain an understanding of the intricate diversity and consistency inherent in language.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThis year, 57 students registered for the Open Round session hosted by Georgia Tech, representing a 58% increase in participation compared to last year. Thirty-six students attended the in-person event on Jan. 23. Additionally, 40 middle and high school students from Georgia, Virginia, and Florida participated in two earlier online training sessions.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ENACLO\u2019s national committee will evaluate the performance of the Open Round participants to determine who will advance to the Invitational Round, which will be held March 13.
