How can we realize this vision in future factories by combining the potentials of AI and extended reality (XR) using new sources of multimodal data? This talk will discuss ideas to transform XR into intelligent companions for future workers that accelerate their progression from novice to expert in performing complex psychomotor tasks through adaptive interventions tailored to their individual needs, skills, and knowledge. An intelligent XR framework will be introduced, designed to facilitate such adaptive interventions through multimodal data-driven activity understanding, error detection and prevention, expertise modeling, and the generation of personalized instructions. Examples of use cases in mechanical assembly, precision inspection, and human-robot/machine interaction will be discussed. The talk will conclude by outlining a research agenda and avenues for future research on human-technology symbiosis within diverse industrial contexts.

Bio: Mohsen Moghaddam is the Gary C. Butler Family Associate Professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering and the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His research focuses on developing human-centered computational models, algorithms, and tools at the intersection of AI and spatial computing to enhance learning and creativity in various industrial use cases. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Northeastern University in Boston. He has also served as a Visiting Professor with the HumanTech project at Politecnico di Milano and as a Visiting Scholar at the Next Level Lab, Harvard University. Dr. Moghaddam earned his PhD in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University and completed a Postdoctoral Associate position at the GE-Purdue Partnership in Research and Innovation in Advanced Manufacturing. His research has been supported by NSF, DARPA, the U.S. Navy, and industry partners.

Speaker: Mohsen Moghaddam, Gary C.
