A 2023 \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2023\/mar\/27\/fossil-fuel-firms-us-universities-colonize-academia\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003EGuardian\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E article, for instance, described student \u201cunease\u201d upon learning that an Exxon employee maintained an office and teaching responsibilities at Princeton University. A 2024 bicameral congressional report, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.budget.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/fossil_fuel_report1.pdf\u0022\u003E\u003Cem\u003EDenial, Disinformation, and Doublespeak: Big Oil\u2019s Evolving Efforts to Avoid Accountability for Climate Change\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, found that more than 80 US universities receive funding from O\u0026amp;G corporations, which sometimes includes the payment of hundreds of millions of dollars and can go on for decades.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn light of such investigations, many students and administrators have concluded that all engagement with O\u0026amp;G companies should be off limits to academic researchers. Some academic institutions have not only stopped accepting research funding; they have also divested from any financial engagement with O\u0026amp;G companies, including withdrawing their endowment investments. While I am firmly in agreement that we need to take decisive, rapid action to address climate change, I argue that there is no good one-size-fits-all answer to the question of whether accepting O\u0026amp;G funding is ethical or compatible with a university\u2019s objectives.
