It launched nearly five years ago as a bold strategy to enhance Georgia Tech\u2019s research capabilities and address some of the world\u2019s most pressing challenges.\u0026nbsp;\u003Cbr\u003E\u003Cbr\u003EResearch Next was composed of three phases. At its outset, the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/researchnext.gatech.edu\/?utm_source=research\u0026amp;utm_medium=website\u0026amp;utm_id=092023\u0022\u003ECommission on Research Next\u003C\/a\u003E tapped the knowledge and expertise of Georgia Tech faculty, staff, and students to broadly analyze the future research landscape for Georgia Tech and for other research-intensive universities.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThen, a second team of faculty, staff, and students worked on Phase 2 of the effort. They created goals aligned with the Institute Strategic Plan to help Georgia Tech respond to the challenges identified in Phase 1. Phase 3 assembled implementation teams to create strategies for achieving the goals laid out in Phase 2.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/research.gatech.edu\/people\/timothy-charles-lieuwen\u0022\u003ETim Lieuwen,\u003C\/a\u003E Georgia Tech\u2019s interim executive vice president for Research and Research Next co-chair, said he is excited about the initiative\u2019s achievements and its \u201ctransformative outcomes.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThanks to the valuable input from our Georgia Tech community, the Research Next team created a framework for the role of research universities in solving societal problems. That led to several significant Georgia Tech initiatives, including HBCU engagement, launching center-scale efforts, research leadership development, and research faculty support. I am particularly proud these initiatives are centered around supporting and developing the people who make our research enterprise thrive,\u201d he said.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EKey Outcomes\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EScaling Research Operations\u003C\/strong\u003E: Identified pain points in invoicing and procurement, onboarded a research center startup manager, and advanced project management workflows.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EHBCU\/MSI Partnerships\u003C\/strong\u003E: Hired a program manager, hosted the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/news.gatech.edu\/news\/2023\/11\/15\/georgia-tech-hosts-forum-develop-research-partnerships-between-hbcus-and-industry\u0022\u003E2023 Research Collaboration Forum\u003C\/a\u003E with 170 attendees, and launched\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/hbcumsi.research.gatech.edu\/collabnext-tool\u0022\u003ECollabNext\u003C\/a\u003E\u003Cem\u003E,\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003Ea software tool to help foster partnerships between Georgia Tech and HBCU faculty members who have similar interests. Our HBCU program was highlighted by the White House and President of the United States.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EResearch Faculty Support\u003C\/strong\u003E: Established an associate vice president for research faculty, improved onboarding, and launched several mentoring programs.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ECommunity Building\u003C\/strong\u003E: Fostered connectedness with events like Research Administrators\u2019 Day and launched Spotlight Awards for staff, faculty, and postdoctoral researchers.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EImproved Administration\u003C\/strong\u003E: Updated 40-plus policies, expanded training, and began developing a chatbot to streamline award lifecycle processes.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ELeadership Development\u003C\/strong\u003E: Created the Research Leadership Academy, launching in Spring 2025, to prepare leaders for large-scale research initiatives.\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cResearch Next has reshaped our interdisciplinary research framework,\u201d said Research Next co-chair\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ae.gatech.edu\/directory\/person\/mark-whorton\u0022\u003EMark Whorton.\u003C\/a\u003E \u201cBy addressing operational excellence and enhancing strategic collaborations, we\u0027ve cultivated a more cohesive and dynamic research setting that drives innovation and discovery.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EOne of the enduring legacies of Research Next is an annual strategic analysis to shape new research and enhance existing projects. It\u2019s meant to foster collaboration, improve communication, and inform hiring priorities. The strategic analysis is an integral component of Georgia Tech President \u00c1ngel Cabrera\u2019s\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.gatech.edu\/news\/2024\/09\/06\/big-bets-refresh-georgia-tech-strategic-plan\u0022\u003EBig Bets\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EChaouki Abdallah, former Georgia Tech executive vice president for Research, launched Research Next to equip Georgia Tech for future challenges through \u201cinnovation, expertise, creativity, and a commitment to improving lives.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn celebrating its conclusion, Abdallah said, \u003Cstrong\u003E\u0022\u003C\/strong\u003EResearch Next has demonstrated that when we come together with a shared vision and plans, we achieve remarkable things.
