{"678799":{"#nid":"678799","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Rising Tide Program Launches for Early Career Scientists","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp dir=\u0022ltr\u0022\u003ECreated in partnership with the new\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cos.gatech.edu\/news\/new-center-science-georgias-tomorrow\u0022\u003EScience for Georgia\u2019s Tomorrow\u003C\/a\u003E initiative, the College of Sciences has launched the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cos.gatech.edu\/rising-tide\u0022\u003ERising Tide Program\u003C\/a\u003E, which will equip early career scientists with two-year fellowships that are focused on faculty mentoring and skills development to apply for competitive faculty positions.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp dir=\u0022ltr\u0022\u003EThe inaugural Rising Tide cohort is set to include seven fellows from several institutions \u2014 with research interests across nuclear physics, urban climate, resource recovery, machine learning, bioinformatics, and ecology.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp dir=\u0022ltr\u0022\u003ERising Tide is spearheaded by\u003Cstrong\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/eas.gatech.edu\/people\/robel-dr-alexander\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAlex Robel\u003C\/strong\u003E,\u003C\/a\u003E an associate professor in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/eas.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences\u003C\/a\u003E who serves as the Program\u2019s inaugural director.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp dir=\u0022ltr\u0022\u003EThe Program has three primary goals. \u201cWe aim to improve our ability to recruit the most promising young scientists and mathematicians to careers at Georgia Tech, to raise the profile of Tech as an institution that develops academic careers in the sciences, and to better align the range of perspectives and lived experiences of faculty with Georgia Tech students,\u201d Robel shares.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp dir=\u0022ltr\u0022\u003ERobel adds that the program leverages the strong culture of mentorship in the College.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp dir=\u0022ltr\u0022\u003E\u201cSince I have been at Georgia Tech, I have been inspired by the many individual faculty in the College of Sciences who have achieved consistent success in mentoring students and postdocs to gratifying academic careers,\u201d he says. \u201cIn designing the Rising Tide Program, my aim was to organize these successful faculty within a program that supports their existing efforts and complements those efforts with professional career development activities.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp dir=\u0022ltr\u0022\u003EThe Rising Tide Program is supported by a generous gift from\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003ENathan Meehan\u003C\/strong\u003E (PHYS 1975) and matching funds from the Office of the Provost.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EScience for the Southeast\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\u003Cp dir=\u0022ltr\u0022\u003ERising Tide is part of the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cos.gatech.edu\/news\/new-center-science-georgias-tomorrow\u0022\u003Ejust-launched\u003C\/a\u003E Science for Georgia\u2019s Tomorrow Center, which prioritizes research and teaching aligned with Georgia-specific issues \u2014 while connecting Georgia communities with that research and teaching. Robel hopes the Program will help provide a pathway to foster this type of local research at the Institute.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp dir=\u0022ltr\u0022\u003E\u201cPart of Rising Tide is to bring more faculty to the Institute who can contribute to research and teaching particularly relevant to communities in Georgia,\u201d Robel explains. \u201cWe aim to improve the ability of the College to recruit scientists with professional or lived experience in the Southeast \u2014 or focused on research with particular relevance to the Southeast.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EResearch future\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\u003Cp dir=\u0022ltr\u0022\u003EEarly career scientists at any institution can be nominated by College of Sciences faculty to participate in Rising Tide.
