Do you accept the offer as-is, or do you counter with a salary that aligns with your skills and experience?\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIf you thought, \u201cjust take the offer,\u201d you\u2019re not alone.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0022Some may feel uncomfortable or anxious about negotiating salary because most people do not talk about their personal money situation,\u0022 said \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/career.gatech.edu\/catharine-groover\/\u0022\u003ECatharine Groover, graduate career development advisor\u003C\/a\u003E in Georgia Tech\u2019s Career Center. \u0022Some may be scared because they think if they ask about salary, the job offer could be taken away.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIt is natural to feel uncomfortable with the topic for many reasons; however, many employers expect you to negotiate.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIt\u2019s a totally normal thing to do,\u0022 said \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/career.gatech.edu\/christina-hall\/\u0022\u003EChristina Hall, graduate career development\u003C\/a\u003E advisor in Georgia Tech\u2019s Career Center.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cblockquote\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIt\u2019s important to remember that job offer negotiation is a collaborative interaction between you and the employer. You are trying to work together to create an offer that works for you, said Hall.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/blockquote\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EGroover and Hall share their tips for tackling salary negotiation with confidence and tact.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ECreating a Strong Counteroffer\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/h2\u003E\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EDo your homework.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/h3\u003E\u003Cp\u003EGroover and Hall recommend doing online research. Resources like Glassdoor, Salary, Levels.fyi, and Payscale can provide salary data for related jobs in the area.\u003Cbr\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ECompare your qualifications with the job description.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/h3\u003E\u003Cp\u003EI cannot stress this enough\u2014experience does not have to be paid experience,\u0022 said Groover. \u0022Academic achievements, internships, research, projects, certifications, and coursework are valuable experiences. These can be used to leverage your skillset, experience, and what you bring to the company, which can result in a higher salary.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EGroover recommends asking yourself the following questions to help determine an appropriate salary:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EAssuming you meet all required qualifications, how many preferred qualifications do you meet?\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EAre you bringing any additional skills that may be beneficial in another area of the company or toward the company\u2019s growth?\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EHow can you help the company grow?\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EWhat are you bringing to the company and that specific role that will benefit the company?\u003Cbr\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EConsider other elements of the compensation package.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/h3\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0022Normally, when we think of job offer negotiation, we think strictly in terms of salary, but other things may be important,\u0022 said Hall. \u0022Are you looking for flexible hours, hybrid working conditions, or professional development opportunities?\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAdditional elements could include time off, relocation expenses, sign-on bonuses, stock options, and travel, according to Groover.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EKnow your bottom line.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/h3\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIf the employer doesn\u2019t accept the counteroffer, it can be a tricky situation. \u0022I think this is where having a walk-away number is important,\u0022 said Hall. \u0022Deciding ahead of time if there is an offer that is just too low to accept. Students could also ask if there are opportunities to increase their salary later, perhaps at a six-month review or make up for it in another way, such as a sign-on bonus.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Ch2\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EOvercoming Negotiation Anxiety\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/h2\u003E\u003Cp\u003EWorrying about cultural norms, imposter syndrome, or the risk of retraction can make negotiating nerve-wracking. According to Hall, employers are motivated to make fair and competitive offers. In her own experience with negotiating, Hall realized it is a totally normal thing to do.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0022It\u2019s not as scary as it seems,\u0022 said Hall. \u0022One employer was impressed I advocated for myself in one scenario, and in the other, they told me they expected it.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EEmployers want to retain top talent. \u0022If a company has given you a job offer, they want to hire you,\u0022 said Groover. \u0022Remain humble yet confident. You have the potential to learn, grow, and become a leader within the company.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Ch3\u003EStick to logic and personal affirmations.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/h3\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0022Imposter syndrome is a real thing,\u0022 said Groover. \u0022Remind yourself, \u2018I am capable of performing the job requirements and learning more. I can achieve my goals. I am capable. I am worthy.\u2019\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Ch3\u003ETake time to process.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/h3\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0022Do not feel the need to accept an offer right on the spot,\u0022 said Groover. \u0022Thank the employer for the offer, express your excitement, and ask if you can have a few days to consider the offer.
