  <title><![CDATA[Arkin, Conte Elected to IEEE Boards]]></title>
  <body><![CDATA[<p>College of Computing professors Ron Arkin and Tom Conte have been elected tothree-year terms on the Boards of Governors for two IEEE (Institute ofElectrical and Electronics Engineers) societies. Arkin will serve on the board for the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT), and Conte was elected to the board of the IEEE Computer Society.<br /></p><p>Arkin, a Regents' Professor in Interactive Computing whose research focus is in robotics, will serve as agovernor from 2010-12 for IEEE SSIT. The organization's 2,000 members worldwide address such issues as environmental, health and safetyimplications of technology; engineering ethics and professionalresponsibility; history of electrotechnology; technical expertise andpublic policy; peace technology; and social issues related to energy,information technology and telecommunications. <br /></p><p>Conte, a professor who heads up the School of Computer Science's architecture group, also will serve a2010-12 term as governor for the IEEE Computer Society, whose 85,000 memberswork in a wide range of computing fields, from artificial intelligenceto networking, to software engineering and graphics processing.</p>]]></body>
