{"677435":{"#nid":"677435","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Choi Receives Best Paper Award for Novel Silicon Solar Cell Design","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ece.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Electrical and Computer Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E (ECE) Ph.D. candidate Wookjin Choi received the Best Student Paper Award in the area of silicon materials and devices at the 52nd \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ieee-pvsc.org\/PVSC52\/\u0022\u003EIEEE Photovoltaics Specialists Conference\u003C\/a\u003E (PVSC) in Seattle, Wash.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EHis award-winning poster, \u201cFabrication and Detailed Analysis of 22.0% Rear Junction Double-side TOPCon Solar Cell with Front SiOx\/Polysilicon Selective Emitter\u201d presents a novel cell design and fabrication process to make next-generation, low-cost, high-efficiency silicon solar cells.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThis method utilizes Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contacts (TOPCON) technology, which uses a thin layer of tunnel oxide to reduce diffusion and metal-induced recombination in silicon solar cells to significantly enhance their efficiency.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe approach has the potential to make solar electricity significantly cheaper than fossil fuels, possibly by two to three times, according to Choi.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u0022Winning this award at IEEE PVSC was a tremendous honor,\u201d he said. \u201cMy future research will focus on optimizing solar cell architectures to enhance performance, aiming to make sustainable energy more accessible.\u0022\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EPVSC is the signature event in the solar power technology and the market sector where over 2,000 scientists and engineers at the forefront of photovoltaic research and development gather.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe research was conducted in ECE\u2019s University Center of Excellence for Photovoltaics, under Choi\u2019s advisor ECE regent\u2019s professor \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ece.gatech.edu\/directory\/ajeet-rohatgi\u0022\u003EAjeet Rohatgi\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe project was supported by the U.S Department of Energy\u2019s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) under Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO).\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EChoi received his B.S. and M.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Georgia Tech and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. with ECE.
