They were asking them to bridge a gap between the sciences and the humanities long seen as nearly impassable.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThis partnership between an engineer and a humanist \u2014 Alamgir, a professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering, and Tsufim, a former postdoctoral researcher in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/lmc.gatech.edu\u0022\u003ESchool of Literature, Media, and Communication\u003C\/a\u003E in Georgia Tech\u2019s\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/iac.gatech.edu\u0022\u003EIvan Allen College of Liberal Arts\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/a\u003E\u2014\u0026nbsp;culminated with students performing interpretations of their equations. The event showcased how creativity can deepen understanding and communication in STEM fields.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThis deep integration of storytelling and science is an example of precisely what this month\u2019s Ivan Allen College\u2019s Humanizing STEM event aims to celebrate and encourage: the power of the liberal arts and STEM fields to enhance one another.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EScheduled for Sept. 20 at the Historic Academy of Medicine Theater (just a note:\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/liberalartsyear.iac.gatech.edu\/humanizing-stem-2024\/\u0022\u003Eregistration\u003C\/a\u003E ends soon), the event will feature TEDx-style presentations by seven noted speakers and responses from Ivan Allen College faculty discussing how integrating STEM, humanities, and social sciences can lead to more innovative, ethical, and inclusive solutions for today\u2019s global challenges.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cStudents come to Georgia Tech eager to solve complex problems, knowing no single discipline holds all the answers,\u201d said Steve McLaughlin, provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs. \u201cBy integrating humanities, social sciences, and STEM fields, we are preparing our students to be the problem-finders and problem-solvers of tomorrow, equipped not just with technical skills, but with empathy, cultural awareness, and a commitment to working on the most important problems for the greater good.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAmong the speakers are Linda Adler-Kassner, associate vice chancellor of teaching and learning at UC Santa Barbara, where she is known for her work in integrating teaching and learning across disciplines; Jim Grossman, executive director of the American Historical Association; and Tina Lu, first vice president of the Modern Language Association.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EEach speaker will be followed by an Ivan Allen College school chair or ROTC commander who will relate how the work done by their faculty boosts belonging, learning, and research on the Georgia Tech campus.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EOne of many examples of such work includes Brian Magerko\u2019s groundbreaking work with\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/iac.gatech.edu\/news\/item\/668095\/making-coding-education-more-accessible-blind-visually-impaired-youth\u0022\u003EEarSketch\u003C\/a\u003E and\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/iac.gatech.edu\/news\/item\/674495\/teaching-collaborate-merely-create-through-dance\u0022\u003ELuminAI\u003C\/a\u003E at the intersection of cognition and creativity. Another is our collaboration with the College of Computing on the innovative two-course\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sci.cc.gatech.edu\/cs-capstone\u0022\u003Ecomputing capstone\u003C\/a\u003E required of all students seeking degrees in Computer Science or Computational Media.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThat program allows students to advance and demonstrate not just their technical know-how, but also their proficiency in professional and technical communication appropriate to the software industry.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cLooking ahead, we\u2019re excited about the potential of our new\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/iac.gatech.edu\/news\/item\/673896\/ivan-allen-college-offer-applications-minor-conjunction-with-engineering\u0022\u003EMinor in the Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning\u003C\/a\u003E, which blends rigorous technical training with critical discussions about ethics and policy,\u201d said Interim Dean\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/iac.gatech.edu\/people\/person\/richard-utz\u0022\u003ERichard Utz\u003C\/a\u003E. \u201cPrograms such as these don\u2019t only prepare students to excel in their fields. They also empower them to shape the future in ways that are socially responsible and inclusive.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EUtz said the goal is not just to celebrate the Ivan Allen College\u2019s impressive track record in fostering collaboration between the liberal arts and STEM fields.
