At this year\u2019s annual address, President \u00c1ngel Cabrera discussed the progress made and outlined a refined approach to meeting the plan\u2019s original goals. \u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn February, Rockefeller Foundation President Rajiv Shah visited campus and shared the framework of a \u201c\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/news.gatech.edu\/news\/2024\/02\/07\/rajiv-shah-advocates-big-bets-approach-problem-solving\u0022 rel=\u0022noreferrer noopener\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Ebig bet\u003C\/a\u003E\u201d \u2014 an idea that identifies innovative approaches to large-scale change. Four big bets were the central theme of the 2024 Institute Address: \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EBe a national leader in outcomes and value for all students.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EDouble the annual number of degrees granted and non-degree learners.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EDouble the scale and amplify the impact of our research enterprise.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EBuild a national hub for innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship in our city and around our campus.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe Institute recently welcomed the largest incoming class in its history, with \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/news.em.gatech.edu\/2024\/08\/21\/georgia-tech-welcomes-new-students\/\u0022 rel=\u0022noreferrer noopener\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003E5,300 students\u003C\/a\u003E, and remains the nation\u2019s fastest-growing public university. It contributed a record \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/news.gatech.edu\/news\/2024\/08\/15\/georgia-techs-economic-impact-reaches-record-53-billion-fiscal-year-2023\u0022 rel=\u0022noreferrer noopener\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003E$5.3 billion to the state economy\u003C\/a\u003E in the last fiscal year \u2014 the most of any institution in the University System of Georgia. \u201cOur growth in scale and impact hasn\u2019t just happened,\u201d Cabrera said. \u201cIt is the result of intentional work and decisions we have made.\u201d\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EHe then identified the steps forward for the Institute as it enters the critical second half of the plan\u2019s implementation. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Ch4\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EBig Bet No. 1: Be a national leader in outcomes and value for all students.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/h4\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech consistently ranks among the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/news.gatech.edu\/news\/2024\/08\/27\/georgia-tech-named-top-value-institution\u0022 rel=\u0022noreferrer noopener\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Etop-value colleges\u003C\/a\u003E in the nation for its return on investment. To ensure this remains the case, insulating students from the inflationary trends of higher education will be important. At Tech, when adjusted for inflation, in-state tuition and fees are 23% lower than five years ago, out-of-state tuition is 17% lower, and international tuition is 16% lower. Reaffirming a commitment to affordability, Cabrera stressed the importance of increasing access to financial aid for low-income students. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cNo talented student should have to give up on their dream of a Georgia Tech degree\u201d for lack of money. \u201cWe need to keep working to convince these talented students that Georgia Tech is for them, and then make sure they have the resources to succeed here,\u201d he said.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003ETech\u2019s graduation rate for Pell Grant recipients ranks eighth in the nation at 86% but remains 8 percentage points below other students. The goal is to eliminate that gap in the next five years. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Ch4\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EBig Bet No. 2: Double the annual number of degrees granted and non-degree learners.\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/h4\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe Institute has launched a new College \u2014 the College of Lifetime\u003Cstrong\u003E \u003C\/strong\u003ELearning, which will offer programs that elevate the academic study of learning and transform the future of education, from K-12 to post-retirement, ensuring that education is accessible at every stage of life.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe Institute conferred 12,000\u0026nbsp;degrees this past academic year, and using 2019 as a baseline (7,500 degrees), the goal is to reach 15,000 by 2030. \u201cOur focus on degrees awarded instead of enrollments is intentional,\u201d Cabrera said. \u201cWe\u2019re focusing not on how big we are but on how much impact we have. Graduates with degrees get good jobs, make money, grow families, pay taxes, and strengthen our communities. They help businesses grow or build their own business and that creates economic opportunity for others.\u201d\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003ETech has added 149 permanent academic faculty in the past year to accommodate a growing student body. Physical expansion continues on campus, with the progression of Tech Square Phase 3 and a new 860-bed residence hall set to open in 2026. The president also announced a \u201ccomplete makeover\u201d planned for the D.M. Smith Building and the Skiles Classroom Building. \u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Ch4\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EBig Bet No. 3\u003C\/strong\u003E: \u003Cstrong\u003EDouble the Scale and Amplify the Impact of Our Research Enterprise\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/h4\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe Institute\u2019s research expenditures reached $1.34 billion last year. The president said Georgia Tech will expand its applied research efforts and build a think tank to \u201cconvene leaders across sectors and infuse technology and science considerations into policy and business decisions.\u201d\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003Cp\u003EResearch areas critical to this effort include\u003Cstrong\u003E \u003C\/strong\u003Eartificial intelligence, biotechnology, cybersecurity, electronics, energy, nanotechnology, space exploration, and sustainability. The recent launch of the AI Makerspace and the AI hub indicates Georgia Tech\u2019s leadership in emerging technology, along with the awarding of grants totaling $119 million for technologies to improve the detection and treatment of cancer.
