<value>
In this work, I describe research targeting the speed of trapped-ion quantum computers. The crux of the thesis covers a groundbreaking cooling method called exchange cooling. When comparing to sympathetic cooling, the standard method in the field, exchange cooling provides roughly an order of magnitude speedup. Exchange cooling also requires far less experimental overhead. The technique will likely soon proliferate into commercial quantum computing systems designed to solve next-generation computational problems.
</value>
