{"674596":{"#nid":"674596","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Advancing Careers of Interdisciplinary Research Faculty at Georgia Tech","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EGrowing the careers of research faculty at Georgia Tech is an integral part of \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/research.gatech.edu\/research-next\u0022\u003EResearch Next\u003C\/a\u003E, the strategic plan for the Institute\u2019s research enterprise.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech\u2019s research faculty, who conduct vital research in labs, centers, and departments across campus, play a critical role in the research enterprise. To support these essential employees, Georgia Tech \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/research.gatech.edu\/empowering-research-faculty-georgia-techs-strategic-plan\u0022\u003Elaunched an initiative\u003C\/a\u003E to recognize and develop its research faculty.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe Research Next team, now in the implementation phase of the plan, was tasked with finding ways to recognize, support, and retain research faculty. This included developing \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/faculty.gatech.edu\/faculty-resources\/new-faculty\u0022\u003Ereference materials and workshops\u003C\/a\u003E specifically designed to guide research faculty seeking promotions. These resources provide essential information on the advancement process, ensuring researchers are well-prepared to take the next step in their careers.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EWith this support and guidance, six researchers from the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/research.gatech.edu\/interdisciplinary-research-institutes\u0022\u003EInterdisciplinary Research Institutes\u003C\/a\u003E and other units reporting to the Vice President of Interdisciplinary Research applied for promotions. All six promotions were approved.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe following interdisciplinary researchers received promotions:\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cul\u003E\u003Cli\u003EDevin Brown, principal research engineer, Institute for Electronics and Nanotechnology\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EMichael Chang, principal research scientist, Brook Byers Institute for Sustainable Systems\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EParamita Chatterjee, research scientist II, Marcus Center for Therapeutic Cell Characterization and Manufacturing\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EEvan Goldberg, principal research engineer, Laboratory for Synthetic Immunity and Global Center for Medical Innovation\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003EVrinda Nandan, research scientist II, Design Intelligence Lab and the National AI Institute for Adult Learning and Online Education\u003C\/li\u003E\u003Cli\u003ESikka Harshvardhan, research scientist II, National AI Institute for Adult Learning and Online Education\u003C\/li\u003E\u003C\/ul\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn addition, the University System of Georgia\u2019s Board of Regents has granted Leanne West, principal research scientist and the chief engineer of pediatric technologies at Georgia Tech, the prestigious distinction of Regents\u2019 Researcher. As Chief Engineer, West coordinates research activities related to pediatrics across campus and serves as the technical liaison for the partnership with Children\u2019s Healthcare of Atlanta.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EWest\u2019s research focuses on mobile and wireless health systems and sensor development, user interfaces, system integration, and diagnostic devices. She has seen her invention of a wireless personal captioning system installed at commercial venues through her start-up, Intelligent Access, LLC.
