{"674429":{"#nid":"674429","#data":{"type":"news","title":"LMC Professor Appears in New Hulu Documentary on \u2018Black Twitter\u2019","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EAndr\u00e9 Brock, associate professor in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication, is featured in a new Hulu documentary on Black Twitter.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EBlack Twitter: A People\u0027s History\u003C\/em\u003E is based on a 2021 \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/black-twitter-oral-history-part-i-coming-together\/\u0022\u003Eseries\u003C\/a\u003E in \u003Cem\u003EWired \u003C\/em\u003Eexploring the influential virtual community that has been instrumental in a number of major social movements, including #BlackLivesMatter and the national conversation that followed the 2014 police killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBrock is widely cited for his research into Black Twitter and other online communities. He is featured in the three-part documentary\u2019s first and third episodes, all of which debut May 9.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cIt was a great experience to be involved in the \u003Cem\u003EWired \u003C\/em\u003Earticles, and this has been a good experience, too,\u201d said Brock.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn the first episode, Brock discusses how Twitter became a popular online gathering spot for Black internet users. In the third episode, he discusses what\u2019s next for the service, which is now called X.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhile much has changed since the 2021 Wired cover story \u2014 Donald Trump is no longer president, Elon Musk is the social media platform\u2019s new owner, and it\u2019s no longer called Twitter \u2014 Brock said the community has held strong and remains a powerful online force.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cIn some ways, it\u2019s similar to the water cooler and in other ways, like the street corner, places where people can gather and that provide a substantial amount of spiritual, emotional, and informational resources,\u201d he told Ivan Allen College communicationssaid Brock.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn addition to Brock, the documentary features numerous others who participated in the Wired series, including . W. Kamau Bell, Kid Fury, Roxane Gay and others.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBrock is the author of \u003Cem\u003EDistributed Blackness: African American Cybercultures\u003C\/em\u003E, which won the Harry Shaw and Katrina Hazzard-Donald Award for Outstanding Work in African-American Popular Culture Studies and the Nancy Baym Annual Book Award in 2021.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHe has been widely cited in media discussions of Black Twitter, including appearances in articles published by CNN, \u003Cem\u003EThe Guardian\u003C\/em\u003E, \u003Cem\u003EMother Jones\u003C\/em\u003E, and more.
