Davenport, a fourth-year undergraduate in Psychology, is one of the first students to complete the new internship, and plans to pursue a doctoral degree and work in industrial-organizational psychology.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThis internship has helped solidify that industrial-organizational psychology is the perfect field for me,\u201d she says. \u201cWithout this experience and my background at Georgia Tech, I wouldn\u2019t be as confident in my ability to succeed in graduate school and in my future career.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe new internship program is the first offered in the School of Psychology, and it\u2019s designed to give students from Psychology and across Georgia Tech the opportunity to apply their undergraduate studies to career focus areas spanning industry to human health \u2014 including human resource departments, schools, mental health centers, and rehabilitation centers.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBeyond giving students the opportunity to see first-hand how psychological theories are integrated and applied in a variety of settings, the internships are also designed to give students a competitive edge in today\u2019s job market, and offer an opportunity for undergraduates to assess and evolve their career goals and trajectory.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDavenport\u2019s experience underscores these goals, says \u003Cstrong\u003EChristopher Stanzione\u003C\/strong\u003E, who manages the program. \u201cWhile many students who choose to study psychology go into clinically-oriented fields, Georgia Tech psychology students are well-equipped for much more,\u201d he explains.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFor example, Stanzione, who serves as a senior academic professional and the associate chair of Undergraduate Studies in the School of Psychology, cites the growing importance of data science in the business world. \u201cThis is where experience with big data comes into play,\u201d he says. \u201cPsychology majors in this part of the discipline are trained for careers in data science and UX (user experience), as common examples,\u201d he says.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cIn industry, we work with organizations, teams, and leadership,\u201d Stanzione adds. \u201cThere are so many workplace-related areas where psychology is critical.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EPsychology in industry\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDavenport was one of two inaugural Science and Society interns within the human resources team at Atlanta construction and civil engineering company BrandSafway.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EBrenton Jones\u003C\/strong\u003E, vice president of BrandSafway\u2019s HR Technology and Operations division and a \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.scheller.gatech.edu\/index.html\u0022\u003EScheller College of Business\u003C\/a\u003E alumni, shares that BrandSafway interns apply learning theories and principles to build engaging, relevant employee training experiences, and enhance worker collaborations. BrandSafway Interns also work on boosting employee performance by leveraging motivation and behavior change theories \u2014 applying knowledge that the students have learned during their studies to real-world situations.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EMarianna Madera\u003C\/strong\u003E, a fourth-year Psychology student, redesigned the company\u2019s training and development website as the program\u2019s second BrandSafway intern. Another project allowed her to put what she\u2019s learned in psychology, computer science, and human-computer interaction into practice so she could improve UX in a corporate context.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThese projects really opened my eyes to the fact there are jobs available in all industries that match my skill set,\u201d Madera says. \u201cWorking with such a creative and dedicated team showed me that the industry side of things can be just as exciting and fulfilling as opportunities in research or academia.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDavenport echoes that sentiment, sharing that \u201cthe empirical and data analysis skills I\u2019ve learned at Georgia Tech prepared me to craft a career development strategy and framework for BrandSafway,\u201d and that the internship helped her realize \u201chow broad the area of psychology is \u2014 specifically industrial and organizational psychology \u2014 and how flexible its application can be.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EInternships across the College of Sciences\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/career.gatech.edu\/careerbuzz\/\u0022\u003EInternship opportunities abound\u003C\/a\u003E across Georgia Tech, and the College of Sciences is focused on cultivating more of these types of programs to meet student and employer demand, with several new efforts slated to launch in the upcoming school year. A database of internships to be offered across the College of Sciences is also under development.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EJames Stringfellow\u003C\/strong\u003E, Career Educator for the College, also emphasizes the importance of prioritizing internships and employment opportunities for students. This past fall, Stringfellow conducted a college-wide \u201cCareer Pulse Survey\u0022 to better understand students\u0027 post-graduation intentions, including their preferred industries and companies.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0022Leveraging these survey findings will inform the College\u0027s Career Center and Employer Connections team,\u0022 he shares, \u0022enabling them to develop strategies to attract relevant companies to campus and facilitate student career opportunities.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe overall aim of these initiatives is for students to gain field experience in how their degree can be used for a job after graduation.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFor example, the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/biosciences.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESchool of Biological Sciences\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E currently offers \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/biosciences.gatech.edu\/undergrad\/biology-internships\u0022\u003Ea number of internships\u003C\/a\u003E with a focus on local government, education, industry, and businesses.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThese internships, available through organizations like the Atlanta Audubon Society, the Centers for Disease Control, and more, provide hands-on experience that aligns with students\u0027 desired career pathways,\u201d says \u003Cstrong\u003EEmily Weigel\u003C\/strong\u003E, a senior academic professional who leads the School\u2019s internship efforts.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn Psychology, Stanzione is already seeing the value that the new internship programs provide for students.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cWe provide our students with experiences beyond what they think their major can do for them, broadening their perspective and developing their networking skills for future job contacts,\u201d he says.
