{"674211":{"#nid":"674211","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Yu Receives Intel Outstanding Research Award for Novel Computing Hardware","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ece.gatech.edu\/directory\/shimeng-yu\u0022\u003ESheming Yu\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;has been awarded \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.intel.com\/content\/www\/us\/en\/research\/news\/outstanding-researcher-awards-2023.html\u0022\u003EIntel\u0027s Outstanding Researcher Award.\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe award recognizes exceptional contributions made through Intel university-sponsored research that aligns with Intel\u2019s mission of creating world-changing technology to improve daily life.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHe was recognized for his project \u201cSimulation of Probabilistic Learning Ecosystems (SIMPLE),\u201d with Ian Young and his team at Intel\u0027s Components Research Labs.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWhile most modern computer hardware is primarily based upon determinist zeros and ones, there are some phenomena that create uncertainty that is beyond the capabilities of this binary system.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EYu\u2019s team used conventional and emerging technologies and novel hardware-software co-design for pathfinding of a prototype small-scale accelerator chip. This super energy-efficient probabilistic hardware will be able to quantify this uncertainty and compute with more robustness.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe team now looks to further research and prototype the design into silicon.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThrough this industry-academia collaboration, multiple students from \u003Ca\u003EYu\u2019s Laboratory for Emerging Devices and Circuits \u003C\/a\u003Ehave interned at Intel and been hired by the company for full-time positions.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHe is the first Georgia Tech faculty to receive the honor since \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ece.gatech.edu\/news\/2023\/12\/mukhopadhyay-receives-intel-outstanding-researcher-award\u0022\u003ESaibal Mukhopadhyay in 2019\u003C\/a\u003E. More recently, ECE assistant professor \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ece.gatech.edu\/directory\/callie-hao\u0022\u003ECong (Callie) Hao\u003C\/a\u003E \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ece.gatech.edu\/news\/2023\/12\/hao-earns-intel-rising-star-faculty-award\u0022\u003Ewon an Intel Rising Star Faculty Award\u003C\/a\u003E in 2023.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EYu\u2019s work has been recognized with a number of recent awards, including the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) Inaugural Young Faculty Award in 2019 and the ACM\/IEEE Design Automation Conference (DAC) Under-40 Innovators Award 2020.
