M.S. student\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EAnisha Tripathi\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;received the tournament\u2019s best new player award.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cI am thrilled to be this tournament\u2019s champion,\u201d Manikandaswamy said. \u201cI appreciate CSE for organizing this event and giving me the opportunity to participate. The tournament was well run and a fun experience.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EManikandaswamy studies cybersecurity under Professor\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EMustaque Ahamad\u003C\/strong\u003E, who holds joint appointments in the School of Computer Science and the School of Cybersecurity and Privacy.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EManikandaswamy\u2019s work is \u201cred team\u201d related. This designation means she takes an adversarial role in her research. She tries to break into systems to help experts understand and strengthen theM.S. student\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EMe\u003C\/strong\u003Eir platforms. Her group is developing a tool that scans for vulnerabilities on websites. The tool is easy to use and does not require computer science or cybersecurity expertise.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cChess helps to think about the opponent\u2019s point of view, thinking about how they are trying to attack you and how to protect yourself. That definitely applies to my master\u2019s.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EProfessor\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EFelix Herrmann\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;advises tournament runner-up Yin. Herrmann is jointly appointment with the Schools of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and CSE.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ETogether,\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.cc.gatech.edu\/news\/machine-learning-could-be-key-early-leakage-detection-underground-carbon-storage-sites\u0022\u003Ethey develop computational methods for seismic imaging and modeling\u003C\/a\u003E. Yin studies machine learning approaches to solve inverse problems and quantify uncertainty in geoscientific applications.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cChess became a habit of ours. I think it\u2019s a great way to take some time to relax and take a break from our research,\u201d Yin said. \u201cIt\u2019s a game that unites us CSE students so that we learn about each other as people and become close friends, not just colleagues.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EManikandaswamy defeated M.S. student\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EAditya Kane\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;and Yin defeated M.S. student\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EKaran Nahar\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;to reach the finals.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe tournament began in January, opening with four weekly matches of round-robin play. These results determined the seeding for the semifinals.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe chess tournament\u2019s starting field of 25 players included School of CSE students, faculty, and staff members.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe CSE Graduate Student Association (GSA) organized and managed the tournament. To encourage participation, CSE GSA solicited participation outside the School of CSE.
