Paden, Jr. Distinguished Chair for innovation in Material Science and Metals Processing, effective January 1, 2024.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAssociate Professor\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.me.gatech.edu\/faculty\/mcdowell-1\u0022\u003EMatthew McDowell\u003C\/a\u003E, Professor\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.me.gatech.edu\/faculty\/zhou-0\u0022\u003EMin Zhou\u003C\/a\u003E, and Woodruff Professor\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.me.gatech.edu\/faculty\/zhu-1\u0022\u003ETing Zhu\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;will hold the position for a five-year term and receive discretionary funding to support their educational and research activities.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThese appointments recognize each of the three recipients for their intellectual leadership and broader impact in the field of material processing, and the ability to help the Woodruff School grow in emerging areas of importance.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThroughout their careers, Matt, Min, and Ting have been leaders in their fields and made significant contributions to research,\u201d said\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.me.gatech.edu\/faculty\/ranjan\u0022\u003EDevesh Ranjan\u003C\/a\u003E, Eugene C. Gwaltney, Jr. School Chair. \u201cThey are highly deserving of this endowed chair position,\u0026nbsp;and I know\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.me.gatech.edu\/faculty\/mcdowell-1\u0022\u003EDavid McDowell\u003C\/a\u003E, who held the Paden Chair until his retirement earlier this year, is proud to pass it on to his son and former long-term collaborators and mentees.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EMcDowell\u2019s research focuses on developing materials for next-generation battery systems, as well as understanding dynamic materials transformations in electrochemical energy devices. He leads the newly established Georgia Tech Advanced Battery Center (GTABC) with co-director Gleb Yushin, a professor in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.mse.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Materials Science and Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E. The new center will build community at the Institute, work to enhance research and educational relationships with industry partners, and create a new battery manufacturing facility on Georgia Tech\u2019s campus.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EZhou\u0027s research interests concern material behavior over a wide range of length scales. His research emphasizes finite element and molecular dynamics simulations as well as experimental characterization with digital diagnostics.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EZhu\u0027s research focuses on the mechanical behavior of advanced engineering materials at the nano to macro-scale. He conducts modeling and simulations using the atomistic, continuum, and multiscale methods.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe endowed chair was made possible by Georgia Tech alumnus Carter N.
