Sherrill has joint appointments in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/chemistry.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Chemistry and Biochemistry\u003C\/a\u003E and \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cse.gatech.edu\/people\/c-david-sherrill\u0022\u003ESchool of Computational Science and Engineering\u003C\/a\u003E at Georgia Tech.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cI\u0027m very honored to be selected as this year\u0027s recipient of the Herty Medal,\u201d Sherrill said. \u201cThis is one of the oldest awards given by the American Chemical Society, named after Charles H. Herty, who founded several chemistry-related industries in the Southeast in the early 20th century. I\u0027ve met many wonderful chemists through the ACS, and it\u0027s a delight to receive this recognition from such a great organization.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe Herty Award has been presented for more than 75 years to honor outstanding work by a chemist in the Southeast. The award recognizes research, education, and service activities in the Southeast, which covers both a large geographic territory and many academic and industrial organizations.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/chemistry.gatech.edu\/people\/mg-finn\u0022\u003EM.G. Finn\u003C\/a\u003E, professor, chair, and James A. Carlos Family Chair for Pediatric Technology in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Georgia Tech, adds that the Herty Medal is one of the most prestigious honors in the \u201cvery active\u201d community of local chapters of the American Chemical Society.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cSherrill has been extraordinarily successful, and extraordinarily generous with his time and expertise,\u201d Finn said. \u201cIndeed, his entire professional life resonates with the concept of service, from the development of computational chemistry tools that everyone can use, to service as editor of a major journal, to leadership at the local and national levels of our professional society. He is a chemist\u2019s chemist, and everyone else\u2019s chemist, too.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESherrill has long been an active member of the ACS, both nationally and in the Georgia Section. In 2017, he received the ACS \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/acsga.org\/awards-and-honors\/\u0022\u003EOutreach Volunteer of the Year Award\u003C\/a\u003E for his work with K-12 teachers during \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.acs.org\/education\/outreach\/ncw.html?cid=ad_onlinestore_shippingemail_ncw_sep-oct_2016\u0022\u003ENational Chemistry Week\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESherill will formally receive his Charles H. Herty Award \u2014 a solid gold medallion \u2014 at the 89th Herty Award Celebration in September. He is also set to serve as a keynote speaker at the Annual \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/acsga.org\/herty-medalist-undergraduate-research-symposium-hmurs\/\u0022\u003EHerty Medalist Undergraduate Research Symposium (HMURS)\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Ch3\u003EAbout David Sherrill\u003C\/h3\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDavid Sherrill is the associate director of Georgia Tech\u2019s \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/research.gatech.edu\/data\u0022\u003EInstitute for Data Engineering and Science\u003C\/a\u003E, which coordinates efforts in data science and high-performance computing. His research involves the development and application of theoretical methods and algorithms in computational quantum chemistry, and he is the lead principal investigator for the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/github.com\/psi4\/psi4\u0022\u003EPsi4 open-source quantum chemistry software package\u003C\/a\u003E. Sherrill is also the director of the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/vergil.chemistry.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESherrill Group lab\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESherrill\u2019s recent research continues his career-long investigation into how molecules interact with each other, but it now involves computational techniques such as machine learning. \u201cIntermolecular interactions control everything from the structure of biomolecules like DNA, to the energetics of organic crystals,\u201d he explains.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cIn collaboration with \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.bms.com\/\u0022\u003EBristol Myers Squibb\u003C\/a\u003E, we\u0027ve been developing models based on machine learning, and these models are nearly as accurate as rigorous quantum mechanics, but they are much faster. Our quantum-based software can only model a small portion of a drug\u0027s interaction with a protein \u2014 perhaps 500 atoms at most, and the computation takes days. With our machine learning model, we can compute the drug interacting with the entire protein in only seconds. We are very excited about the possibilities opened up by such a fast and accurate model.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESherrill is a Fellow of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.aaas.org\/\u0022\u003EAmerican Association for the Advancement of Science\u003C\/a\u003E, the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.aps.org\/\u0022\u003EAmerican Physical Society\u003C\/a\u003E, and ACS.
