The fellowship recognizes the success of Wang\u2019s research efforts to make artificial intelligence (AI) and ML systems more transparent and accessible.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EAs the power and complexity of these systems continue to advance at breakneck speed, his advisor says Wang\u2019s work is vitally important.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u201cJay\u0027s research connects humans and ML systems. His work on easy-to-use and interactive interfaces is crucial to making ML more interpretable, accessible, and reliable,\u201d said Polo Chau, School of Computational Science and Engineering associate professor.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003ETo help people better connect with these systems, Wang leverages his expertise, not only in ML, but also in data visualization. He\u2019s developed several interactive visualization tools that are designed to help technical and nontechnical people understand deep learning, neural networks, and other ML-related topics. These include:\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/poloclub.github.io\/cnn-explainer\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022 title=\u0022http:\/\/poloclub.github.io\/cnn-explainer\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ECNN Explainer\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E,\u0026nbsp;an open-source tool developed for deep-learning beginners. Since its release in July 2020, more than 180,000 global visitors have used the tool.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/interpret.ml\/gam-changer\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022 title=\u0022https:\/\/interpret.ml\/gam-changer\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EGAM Changer\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, which\u0026nbsp;empowers users in healthcare, finance, or other domains to edit ML models to include knowledge and values specific to their domain, which improves reliability. This tool won a best paper award at the 2021\u0026nbsp;Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems. It has also been integrated into Microsoft\u0027s Interoperability Library.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/poloclub.github.io\/diffusiondb\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022 title=\u0022https:\/\/poloclub.github.io\/diffusiondb\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EDiffusionDB\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E,\u0026nbsp;a first-of-its-kind large-scale dataset that lays a foundation to help people better understand generative AI. This work could lead new research in detecting deepfakes\u0026nbsp;and designing human-AI interaction tools to help people more easily use these models.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EBuilding upon his success, Wang has two accepted papers at the upcoming ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EOne of these,\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.jennwv.com\/papers\/gamcoach.pdf\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Cem\u003EGAM Coach: Towards Interactive and User-centered Algorithmic Recourse\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, describes an interactive ML tool that could be used to help people who have been rejected for a loan by automatically letting an applicant know what\u2019s needed for them to receive loan approval.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003EThe Apple Scholars in AI\/ML PhD fellowship program will enable Wang to explore more work like this, as well as more high-risk\/high-reward research opportunities.\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/span\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u003Cspan\u003E\u201cIt is a tremendous privilege to be awarded this fellowship, and I am excited about the opportunity to collaborate with researchers at Apple in my research projects.
