Third-generation Georgia Tech Graduate Embarks on Museum Career

In January, history and sociology student Teresa Muñoz will move to Charleston, South Carolina, to start her new job as a curatorial assistant at the Gibbes Museum of Art. But before she steps off campus and into her career, Muñoz took a moment to reflect on her time at Ivan Allen College and Georgia Tech.

The third generation in her family to attend the Institute, Muñoz will graduate this weekend with a B.S. in History, Technology, and Society (HTS) and a minor in Spanish. She said her proudest achievement from her time at Tech was the impact she had in her student jobs, such as her position at the Robert C. Williams Museum of Papermaking.

“For the last year and a half, I have been entrusted with the student-led Artifact of the Month project. It includes choosing an artifact, accessioning it [entering it into library records] if necessary, researching and photographing it, and then writing a short report for the newsletter and its temporary exhibit spotlight. Not only did I get to refine the skills I learned in my HTS classes, but I was also able to expose people to wonderful, hidden treasures of history,” Muñoz said.

Although the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted some of her undergraduate years, Muñoz still had many memorable moments with her classmates. She said her most unique experience at Georgia Tech was reenacting historical events in Lecturer Dana Viezure’s classes.

“It was definitely wild to enter into the personage of a French bishop on the Fourth Crusade in Constantinople when we had to switch to online classes. And I will never forget the alliances or friendships I made in character during the Trial of Galileo and the Athenian Assembly in 403 B.C.”

As for her biggest takeaway from her time at Georgia Tech?

“Our college experience is really what we make of it,” Muñoz said. “When I first started at Tech, I heard the saying ‘study, sleep, socialize: pick two,’ and it really came true at certain points. Eventually, I learned a little better how to balance reading for all my classes, trying to catch time with my friends, and actually taking care of my health. I could not have done it without the support of my faith, my family, my friends, and the Catholic Center.”

Congratulations on your graduation, Teresa!

revisit them. It's as though the act of writing the thing down frees me
