{"662475":{"#nid":"662475","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Georgia Tech undergraduate explores career options through pre-teaching internships","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EIn his first year at Georgia Tech, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/coe.gatech.edu\/schools\/mechanical-engineering\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Emechanical engineering\u0026nbsp;major\u003C\/a\u003E Daniel Webber had the opportunity to engage with\u0026nbsp;middle and high school students through two unique\u0026nbsp;internships that allowed him to explore teaching as a\u0026nbsp;possible career choice.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I don\u0026rsquo;t have a particular plan for immediately after college\u0026nbsp;but want to seek an engineering position in which I am\u0026nbsp;making a visibly positive impact on others\u0026rsquo; lives and\u0026nbsp;exercising the full extent of my creativity,\u0026rdquo; he said. \u0026ldquo;I\u0026nbsp;have been trying to find something of a niche in between\u0026nbsp;engineering and education.\u0026rdquo;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EBoth internships were made possible through\u0026nbsp;existing partnerships created by the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ceismc.gatech.edu\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ECenter for\u0026nbsp;Education Integrating Science, Mathematics,\u0026nbsp;and Computing (CEISMC)\u003C\/a\u003E. For the last\u0026nbsp;decade, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/preteaching.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EPre-Teaching\u003C\/a\u003E Advisor Susan\u0026nbsp;Belmonte has been facilitating these types\u0026nbsp;of experiential learning opportunities\u0026nbsp;with public and private schools and\u0026nbsp;community organizations.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Students who complete the internships\u0026nbsp;traditionally have some interest in\u0026nbsp;education whether using their talents\u0026nbsp;directly as a teacher in that space or\u0026nbsp;being involved through their industry\u0026nbsp;through outreach,\u0026rdquo; explained Belmonte,\u0026nbsp;who has a dual role with CEISMC and\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/pgpp.oue.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EPre-Graduate and Pre-Professional\u0026nbsp;(PGPP) Advising\u003C\/a\u003E. \u0026ldquo;These opportunities\u0026nbsp;allow students to delve deeper into their\u0026nbsp;interests early on so they can make better\u0026nbsp;informed future career decisions.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn spring 2022, Webber was one of three\u0026nbsp;Georgia Tech pre-teaching interns at Centennial Academy, a K-8 school in Atlanta. He worked\u0026nbsp;in a sixth-grade science classroom, observing\u0026nbsp;lessons, leading small and large group instruction, and collaboratively planning problem-based learning (PBL) activities.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFor example, Webber designed and executed a classwide\u0026nbsp;PBL, \u0026ldquo;Planet Crayon,\u0026rdquo; in which students were astronomers\u0026nbsp;tasked with mapping out a crayon-based planet using coordinate\u0026nbsp;planes and creating prototypes of the planet\u0026rsquo;s\u0026nbsp;waxy rock formations, utilizing their rock cycle knowledge.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;I now know that my ideal education\u0026nbsp;environment and generally my professional environment is one\u0026nbsp;where I am\u0026nbsp;allowed to express creative freedom,\u0026rdquo; he said. \u0026ldquo;If I pursue education\u0026nbsp;as a career, it will be with a subject matter\u0026nbsp;highly prone to unconventional teaching methods and\u0026nbsp;interdisciplinary connections, and I would not have known how important\u0026nbsp;that was to me until my internship with\u0026nbsp;Centennial Academy.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDuring the summer, Webber was the first undergraduate\u0026nbsp;pre-teaching intern to participate in CEISMC\u0026rsquo;s \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/ceismc.gatech.edu\/gift\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EGeorgia-Intern Fellowships for Teachers (GIFT) program\u003C\/a\u003E, which\u0026nbsp;places K-12 teachers in STEM-based internships with\u0026nbsp;universities, organizations, and industry.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHe worked in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ssdsl.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ESmart Structures and Dynamical Systems\u0026nbsp;Laboratory\u003C\/a\u003E of Woodruff Professor of Mechanical Engineering\u0026nbsp;Alper Erturk who hosted teacher Kimberly Ford and students\u0026nbsp;Simone Marshall and Shameria Smith from Booker T.\u0026nbsp;Washington High School as part of the GIFT program.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EWebber said that he was happy to participate in another\u0026nbsp;opportunity to engage with students, this time\u0026nbsp;explaining\u0026nbsp;in more relatable terms the complex concepts behind studying\u0026nbsp;the acoustic properties of the human skull.\u0026nbsp;He also demonstrated his 3D printing knowledge by\u0026nbsp;creating the skull prototypes that were used in the wave\u0026nbsp;propagation experiments.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;The research Dr. Alper and graduate researcher Eetu\u0026nbsp;Kohtanen are conducting in the lab is amazing, and even in\u0026nbsp;the absence of any K-12 connection, I would find the work exciting\u0026nbsp;and fruitful,\u0026rdquo; he said. \u0026ldquo;Through GIFT, however, I\u0026nbsp;was able to devote just as much to the advancement of the\u0026nbsp;research as I would to the investment in the next generation of researchers.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Cem\u003E\u0026mdash;Jo\u0026euml;lle Walls, CEISMC Communications\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ESIDEBAR:\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDaniel Webber was the first undergraduate pre-teaching intern to participate in CEISMC\u0026#39;s Georgia-Intern Fellowships for Teachers (GIFT) program over the summer.
