{"660021":{"#nid":"660021","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Georgia Tech\u2019s Newest ADVANCE Professor: Jean Lynch-Stieglitz","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe College of Sciences is pleased to announce that \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/eas.gatech.edu\/people\/lynch-stieglitz-dr-jean\u0022\u003EJean Lynch-Stieglitz\u003C\/a\u003E, professor in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/eas.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences\u003C\/a\u003E (EAS) and a former associate chair in the School, is the newest \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/advance.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EADVANCE \u003C\/a\u003EProfessor at Georgia Institute of Technology.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ELynch-Stieglitz is one of six ADVANCE Professors, one for each college at Georgia Tech.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cI was delighted to be asked to serve as ADVANCE Professor,\u201d Lynch-Stieglitz said.\u0026nbsp; \u201cI\u2019m looking forward to finding out more about the concerns of faculty across the College of Sciences, and doing my best to work towards a Georgia Tech that is welcoming and a great place to work and study for all.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u201cDr. Lynch-Stieglitz is an internationally recognized climate scientist who is an expert on past climate, ocean circulation and composition,\u201d said \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/eas.gatech.edu\/people\/huey-dr-greg\u0022\u003EGreg Huey\u003C\/a\u003E, professor and chair of the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. \u201cMore importantly to EAS, Jean is an exceptionally effective leader with a clear vision. She has led efforts in EAS to modernize our hiring and recruiting practices to enhance diversity and inclusion. Jean is also an excellent mentor of both students and junior faculty. I am delighted that she was selected to be the COS Advance Professor. I know that she will lead COS forward on multiple fronts.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ESupported by \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/diversity.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EInstitute Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion\u003C\/a\u003E, Georgia Tech\u2019s \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/advance.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EADVANCE Program\u003C\/a\u003E builds and sustains an inter-college network of professors who are world-class researchers and role models to support the community and advancement of women and minorities in academia by \u201cadvocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion, advising campus leadership on policy and structure, increasing awareness and reducing the impact of implicit bias, and making data-driven recommendations for faculty retention, advancement, and satisfaction.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EIn 2001, the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/\u0022\u003ENational Science Foundation\u003C\/a\u003E began awarding grants to universities to establish \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/crssprgm\/advance\/\u0022\u003EADVANCE programs\u003C\/a\u003E to \u201cincrease the representation and advancement of women in academic science and engineering careers.\u201d Although the Institute\u2019s NSF grant expired six years later, Georgia Tech has since upheld and expanded its ADVANCE Program to include the support and retention of women and minority faculty.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAt Georgia Tech, ADVANCE\u2019s ultimate goal is to \u201cdevelop systemic and institutional approaches that increase the representation, full participation, and advancement of women and minorities in academic STEM careers \u2014 thus contributing to a more diverse workforce, locally and nationally.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EAna (Annie) Ant\u00f3n (College of Computing), Terry Blum (Scheller College of Business), Nancey Green Leigh (College of Design), Martha Grover (College of Engineering), and Mary McDonald (Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts) complete the Institute\u2019s six-member ADVANCE Program team. Previously, Kim Cobb, now director of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cos.gatech.edu\/news\/kim-cobb-lead-institute-brown-environment-and-society\u0022\u003EInstitute at Brown for Environmental Science\u003C\/a\u003E at Brown University, served as ADVANCE Professor for the College of Sciences at Georgia Tech.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EFinding climate clues in an ocean\u2019s past\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ELynch-Stieglitz has been with Georgia Tech\u2019s faculty since 2003. Previous to her appointment as ADVANCE Professor, she served as associate chair in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences from 2015-2022, where she has focused on creating processes to establish and nurture a diverse faculty community.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ELynch-Stieglitz\u2019s research uses the chemistry of tiny shells that accumulate on the sea floor to reconstruct how the ocean and climate have changed in the past. \u201cThe students in my lab are currently working to unravel how past ocean oxygen concentrations are related to atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and climate, as well as how the ocean and atmosphere in the tropics have responded to varying levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide and intensity of glaciation in the past,\u201d she said.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EHer research group investigates changes in ocean circulation and climate since the height of the last ice age, combining geochemical methods for gathering data on the state of the past ocean with the analytical tools and approaches of modern oceanography.\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003ELynch-Stieglitz currently serves on the Board of Reviewing Editors at \u003Cem\u003EScience Magazine\u003C\/em\u003E, and was editor of Earth and \u003Cem\u003EPlanetary Science Letters\u003C\/em\u003E from 2012-2015. She was elected a Fellow of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.aaas.org\/\u0022\u003EAmerican Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)\u003C\/a\u003E in 2015 and a Fellow of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.agu.org\/\u0022\u003EAmerican Geophysical Union (AGU)\u003C\/a\u003E in 2019 in recognition of her work on ocean circulation changes over the transition out of the last ice age.
