{"659661":{"#nid":"659661","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Georgia Tech Welcomes First GRA Distinguished Investigator, New Eminent Scholar","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EThe Georgia Institute of Technology is pleased to announce the appointment of the Institute\u0026rsquo;s first Georgia Research Alliance (GRA) Distinguished Investigator, Jason Azoulay, as well as a new GRA Eminent Scholar, Lynn Kamerlin \u0026mdash; bringing the Institute\u0026rsquo;s total of GRA Eminent Scholars to 27.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EEstablished in 1990, GRA is a public-private partnership that supports the recruitment of top scientists to Georgia universities, expanding research and entrepreneurship at Georgia\u0026rsquo;s universities to grow the state\u0026rsquo;s economy and national competitiveness.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAnnually, $688 million in outside research funding is attracted by GRA Scholars, and 25% of research funding coming to the state of Georgia is attracted by a GRA Scholar.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAzoulay will come to Georgia Tech in Spring 2023 from the School of Polymer Science and Engineering at The University of Southern Mississippi and will work as an associate professor and Vasser-Woolley GRA Distinguished Investigator in Sensors and Instrumentation in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, with a joint appointment in the School of Materials Science and Engineering.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EKamerlin, currently a professor in the Biochemistry Program of the Department of Chemistry at Uppsala University, Sweden, will arrive at Georgia Tech in October 2022, as professor and Vasser-Woolley GRA Eminent Scholar Chair in Molecular Design, also in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Lynn Kamerlin\u0026rsquo;s exploration of enzymes and proteins is nothing short of astounding,\u0026rdquo; said GRA President Susan Shows. \u0026ldquo;The research she is doing opens up paths to all kinds of exciting outcomes, from major advances in biomedicine to new ways of breaking down toxic materials. And, her passion for educating the next generation of scientists will be a great asset to Georgia Tech.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EKamerlin is an international leader in the use of computational methods to understand how enzymes function and how to design them for desired properties. Particular areas of emphasis in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/kamerlinlab.com\/\u0022\u003EKamerlin Lab\u003C\/a\u003E include ligand-gated conformational changes in enzyme catalysis, protein-DNA recognition, protein dynamics as a key component of evolutionary selection and in the behavior of disordered peptides, and new methods for computational enzymology.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Professor Kamerlin\u0026rsquo;s wide-ranging group will add exciting strength to the outstanding biochemistry and chemical biology community in Atlanta and the state,\u0026rdquo; said M.G. He is the kind of enterprising scientist GRA aims to bring to Georgia.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Professor Azoulay is an organic, organometallic, and polymer chemist and internationally recognized leader in the development of light-active and electrically active materials,\u0026rdquo; said Finn. \u0026ldquo;The \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/azoulaygroup.org\u0022\u003EAzoulay Laboratory\u003C\/a\u003E is highly interdisciplinary with efforts spanning new catalytic methods for polymer synthesis, recycling, and upcycling; electronic, photonic, magnetic, and quantum materials; and the advancement of new infrared devices and chemical sensors. Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s many efforts in soft-matter and functional materials development will benefit greatly from the Azoulay group\u0026rsquo;s presence on campus.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAzoulay and Kamerlin are among four new faculty members set to join the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Georgia Tech in the upcoming school year.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\n\u003Cbr \/\u003E\r\nEarlier this year, \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/news.gatech.edu\/news\/2022\/02\/10\/suman-datta-joins-college-engineering-gra-eminent-scholar\u0022\u003ESuman Datta\u003C\/a\u003E, one of the nation\u0026rsquo;s top researchers in semiconductor and nanoelectronic device research, was also named a GRA Eminent Scholar at the Institute.
