For the past\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cos.gatech.edu\/news\/epidemics-focus-virtual-format-qbios-takes-annual-hands-modeling-workshop-online\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Etwo\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/workshop2021.qbios.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Eyears\u003C\/a\u003E, these workshops have been held virtually, reaching over\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/weitzgroup.biosci.gatech.edu\/2021\/07\/12\/computing-covid-19-virtual-quantitative-biosciences-workshop-dives-deep-into-the-use-of-computational-modeling-in-response-to-epidemics\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003E150 attendees\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;from around the world with the apt theme of modeling epidemics.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThis summer, organizers welcomed 45 attendees for an in-person workshop for the first time since 2019.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;While virtual workshops have some benefits \u0026mdash; for example being able to reach a larger audience \u0026mdash; being in-person is so much more conducive to forming connections with people,\u0026rdquo; shared\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/physics.gatech.edu\/user\/james-jc-gumbart\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EJ.C. Gumbart\u003C\/a\u003E, associate professor in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/physics.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ESchool of Physics\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and associate director of the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/qbios.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EQuantitative Biosciences\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;Ph.D. program at Georgia Tech. \u0026ldquo;One of my favorite parts of workshops is just sitting and chatting with participants one-on-one about their research background and interests, something that\u0026rsquo;s very hard to do over Zoom.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOrganized by the first-year Quantitative Biosciences (QBioS) and the NIH T32\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/sites.gatech.edu\/inqubate\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EIntegrative and Quantitative Biosciences Accelerated Training Environment\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;(InQuBATE) cohorts, this year\u0026rsquo;s two-day workshop highlighted how computational modeling can be applied to better understand gene expression. As no prior modeling or even programming experience was necessary to attend, the in-person workshop was open to graduate students, scientists, and faculty members from any field of research.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe workshop opened with a lecture on the event\u0026rsquo;s theme, stochastic gene expression, delivered by\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/weitzgroup.biosci.gatech.edu\/people\/adriana-lucia-sanz\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EAdriana Lucia-Sanz\u003C\/a\u003E, postdoctoral researcher in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/weitzgroup.biosci.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EWeitz Group\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;at Georgia Tech, which is led by\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/weitzgroup.biosci.gatech.edu\/people\/joshua-weitz\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EJoshua Weitz\u003C\/a\u003E, professor and Tom and Marie Patton Chair of\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/biosciences.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EBiological Sciences\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and founding director of the Quantitative\u0026nbsp;Biosciences program.
