{"657519":{"#nid":"657519","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Susan Lozier Appointed to Climate Security Roundtable","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EAt the direction of Congress, the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/\u0022\u003ENational Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine\u003C\/a\u003E is establishing a \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/our-work\/climate-security-roundtable\u0022\u003EClimate Security Roundtable\u003C\/a\u003E convening experts from academia, the private sector, and civil society to provide support to the Climate Security Advisory Council (CSAC).\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ECSAC is a joint partnership between the U.S. Intelligence Community and the Federal Science Community and seeks to better understand and anticipate the ways climate change affects U.S. national security interests.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe new Climate Security Roundtable will support CSAC in anticipating, preparing, and ultimately preventing climate security crises from escalating into national security challenges and threats.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cos.gatech.edu\/about\/meet-susan-lozier\u0022\u003ESusan Lozier\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/strong\u003E, dean and Betsy Middleton and John Clark Sutherland Chair of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cos.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ECollege of Sciences\u003C\/a\u003E at \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/research.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003EGeorgia Tech\u003C\/a\u003E, will serve a three-year term on the Roundtable, which is aimed at facilitating dialogue and collaboration on:\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cul\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cp\u003EEmerging, abrupt, and understudied risks associated with the changing climate that could have implications for national security.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\t\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cp\u003EExchange of data, knowledge, and expertise on the topic of climate security, gaps in these exchanges, and viable solutions to address gaps.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\t\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cp\u003EEarth system observing, modeling, research, collection, and analytic priorities relevant to improving understanding and to helping anticipate, prepare for, and prevent climate security crises.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\t\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cp\u003EUnderstanding human behavior in the context of social, political, economic, and other stresses related to climate change.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\t\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cp\u003EIndicators and early warnings of risks to national security from changing climate.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\t\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cp\u003ECapacity building across the intelligence community.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\t\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cp\u003EOther assistance, resources, or capabilities that the sponsoring entities deem necessary with respect to supporting the duties and responsibilities of the Climate Security Advisory Council.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\t\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\u003C\/ul\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDean Lozier is joined by three dozen fellow committee members, including Georgia Tech alumnus \u003Cstrong\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/newcollege.asu.edu\/vernon-morris\u0022\u003EVernon R. Morris\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/strong\u003E (Ph.D., Geophysical Sciences, \u0026#39;91), a professor of Chemistry and Environmental Sciences and the director of the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/newcollege.asu.edu\/\u0022\u003ENew College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences\u003C\/a\u003E at \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.asu.edu\/\u0022\u003EArizona State University\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EClimate Research and Solutions\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELozier, a physical oceanographer who also serves as president of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.agu.org\/\u0022\u003EAmerican Geophysical Union\u003C\/a\u003E and as a professor in the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/eas.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003ESchool of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences\u003C\/a\u003E, is also the recipient of the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cos.gatech.edu\/news\/susan-lozier-receives-top-american-meteorological-society-honor\u0022\u003E2022 Henry Stommel Research Medal\u003C\/a\u003E from the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ametsoc.org\/index.cfm\/ams\/\u0022\u003EAmerican Meteorological Society (AMS)\u003C\/a\u003E for her \u0026ldquo;theoretical, observational, modeling contributions, and leadership in significantly improving our understanding of Atlantic Ocean circulation.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe distinction is \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ametsoc.org\/index.cfm\/ams\/about-ams\/ams-awards-honors\/2022-awards-and-honors-recipients\/\u0022\u003Ethe highest honor\u003C\/a\u003E that AMS gives to an oceanographer, and is named in memoriam of Henry Stommel (1920-1992), a major contributor to the field of physical oceanography.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFor nearly a decade, Lozier has led a \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/news\/news_summ.jsp?org=NSF\u0026amp;cntn_id=129117\u0026amp;preview=false\u0022\u003ENational Sciences Foundation (NSF) funded\u003C\/a\u003E project to better understand the issue, serving as a U.S. principal investigator for the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.o-snap.org\/\u0022\u003EOverturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP)\u003C\/a\u003E \u0026mdash; an international ocean observing system that provides a continuous record of water temperature, salinity, speed, and other vital signs swirling between eastern Canada, Greenland, and the Scottish Shelf.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ESince summer 2014, OSNAP\u0026rsquo;s necklace of oceanic instruments \u0026mdash; along with a network of glider surveys and subsurface floats \u0026mdash; have gathered data that is analyzed against additional and comparative data from satellites, surface wind fields, and other arrays in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, or AMOC.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThree years ago, Lozier and team \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/full\/10.1126\/science.aau6592\u0022\u003Esurfaced a major unexpected driver\u003C\/a\u003E of AMOC\u0026rsquo;s overturning and variability: warm, salty, shallow waters between Greenland and Scotland. Those findings have helped improve global climate models \u0026mdash; and came in stark contrast to a previous consensus that pointed to the Labrador Sea, between Canada and Greenland, as the system\u0026rsquo;s primary source of subpolar overturning and variability.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAlthough AMOC flows vary over time, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change projects an overall slowdown this century due to reduced deep convection \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/03\/02\/climate\/atlantic-ocean-climate-change.html\u0022\u003Ein the North Atlantic\u003C\/a\u003E, pressing the need for proactive and collaborative research and solutions.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003ELozier sees the Climate Security Roundtable as a new partner in this space. \u0026ldquo;Between the Intelligence agencies, the State Department, and others, there\u0026rsquo;s both an understanding of the impact of climate change \u0026mdash; and also active awareness of what we need to do to mitigate climate change,\u0026rdquo; Lozier says.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n","summary":null,"format":"limited_html"}],"field_subtitle":[{"value":"Lozier will serve a three-year term on the inaugural Climate Security Roundtable, a joint initiative across the U.S. Congress and the National Academies.
