ECE Grad Programs Receive Top Spots in U.S. News & World Report Rankings

Both graduate programs in the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) received top spots in the U.S. News & World Report annual rankings released March 29.

Electrical engineering moved up one spot to fourth (tied with the California Institute of Technology and the University of Illinois), while computer engineering came in at sixth in the publication’s 2023 edition of Best Graduate Schools. In terms of rankings among public universities, electrical engineering maintained its spot at second place and computer engineering maintained its third-place position.

"As the largest ECE graduate program in the United States, we have a unique understanding of what it takes to be a leader in education, innovation and research,” said Arijit Raychowdhury, the Steve W. Chaddick School Chair for ECE. “I continue to be amazed at the incredible commitment and passion of ECE students, faculty, and staff. It’s truly a testament to their hard work that Georgia Tech ECE continues to receive such high rankings and recognition as a premier graduate program."

The College of Engineering is now No. 7 in the nation among engineering graduate programs. That’s one spot higher than last year and tied with the California Institute of Technology. The College is fourth among public universities, and for the 11th year in a row, all 11 of the College’s graduate programs are ranked in the nation’s top 10.

With over 110 faculty members at three campuses, ECE covers a broad range of research topics and offers over 100 graduate-level ECE courses in a wide selection of areas. The school is home to 11 areas of specialization, 19 research centers, and numerous laboratories. During the last five years, ECE has averaged $51-$58 million per year in corporate, governmental, and research foundation support. Almost every industry, including aerospace, biomedical, energy, robotics, manufacturing, automotive, and computer, recruits ECE graduates.

Rankings for the engineering colleges that provided data were calculated based on a weighted average of 10 indicators, while specific “specialty rankings” (like the EE and CmpE programs) are based on peer assessments.
