{"656586":{"#nid":"656586","#data":{"type":"news","title":"First-Year Semester Abroad at Georgia Tech-Lorraine - Fall 2021","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech-Lorraine welcomed the first cohort of Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s\u0026nbsp;First-Year Semester Abroad Program in Fall 2021. After getting a jumpstart with a summer session on the Atlanta campus, first-year students to Georgia Tech accelerated their journey to becoming global citizens with their first fall semester spent on the Lorraine campus in Metz, France.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe new program was led by Dr. Vicki Birchfield, Georgia Tech-Lorraine\u0026rsquo;s resident political scientist. The program embodies the Georgia Institute of Technology\u0026rsquo;s commitment to \u0026ldquo;Connect Globally,\u0026rdquo; one of the focus areas of Georgia Tech\u0026rsquo;s 2020-2030 Strategic Plan. According to Dr. Birchfield, \u0026ldquo;the objective is to broaden students\u0026rsquo; intellectual and cultural horizons, help them to develop intercultural sensitivity, and deepen their knowledge and understanding of Europe through both classroom and experiential learning.\u0026quot;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe inaugural cohort brought together 41 students representing 10 different nationalities. Most students were either computer science or engineering majors; all were inquisitive and game to be part of Tech\u0026#39;s very first,\u0026nbsp;First-Year Semester Abroad program.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EOutside of their work in the classroom, students participated in a cultural and historical immersion program to get to know France and discover the Moselle department along with the larger \u003Cem\u003EGrand Est\u003C\/em\u003E region. The activities and visits that took place over the course of the semester were key to educating students on the importance of these sites to European integration.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFrom the start of the semester, students jumped right in to participate in regional events, from the \u003Cem\u003EF\u0026ecirc;te de la Mirabelle\u003C\/em\u003E (an event celebrating the region\u0026rsquo;s iconic fruit \u0026ndash; the Mirabelle plum) to the \u003Cem\u003EJourn\u0026eacute;es de Patrimoine\u003C\/em\u003E (Heritage Days). It didn\u0026#39;t take long for the students to appreciate the richness of the heritage of Metz and the surrounding region.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAmong the fall semester\u0026rsquo;s most memorable visits were:\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cul\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cp\u003EA day trip to Scy-Chazelles to dive into history while learning about Robert Schuman\u0026rsquo;s life and his role in building Europe as it came out of World War II;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\t\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cp\u003EVisits to Domr\u0026eacute;my-la-Pucelle, the birthplace of Joan of Arc, with its beautiful Basilica\u202f;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\t\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cp\u003EColombey-les-Deux-Eglises to see the Charles de Gaulle Memorial and family home (La Boisserie)\u202f;\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\t\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\u003C\/ul\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cul\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cp\u003ECh\u0026acirc;teau de Malbrouck where students saw the exposition, \u0026ldquo;Asterix, the European\u0026rdquo; to learn more about this beloved French comic book character who contributes so strongly to French national identity;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\t\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cp\u003EA long weekend in Paris with highlights that included a visit to the National Assembly, a tour of the Pantheon, the Luxembourg Gardens, The Institute of the Arab World, and a tour of Station F, Paris\u0026rsquo; innovative startup campus.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\t\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\u003C\/ul\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EStudents chose between one of three weeklong faculty-led fall break trips:\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cul\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cp\u003EBrussels, Belgium: \u0026ldquo;Getting to Know the European Union,\u0026rdquo; with Dr. Vicki Birchfield,\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\t\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cp\u003EBerlin, Germany\u202f:\u0026nbsp; \u0026ldquo;Entrepreneurship and Startup Culture: the German Approach,\u0026rdquo; with Dr. Henry Owen,\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\t\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cli\u003E\r\n\t\u003Cp\u003ENice, France: \u0026ldquo;Art and the European Avant-Garde,\u0026rdquo; with Dr. Lizzy LeRud.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\t\u003C\/li\u003E\r\n\u003C\/ul\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAfter testing their independence and travel skills at during the fall break trips, students were empowered to plan their own independent weekend trips, traveling in small groups for the rest of the semester.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EStudents returned to the Atlanta campus for the spring semester, after a memorable start to their college career that is certain to influence the rest of their time at Georgia Tech.
