In the book, Holterhoff, a former Marion L. Brittain Fellow, examines illustrations that accompanied novels published by some of the most popular U.S. and British authors of the late 19^th- and early 20^th centuries, such as H. Rider Haggard, Rudyard Kipling, James De Mille, Robert Louis Stevenson, and H. G. Wells. In doing so, Holterhoff demonstrates the significance of images to the fin de siècle, or “end of century,” romance fiction.

“In order to make fantastic plots seem possible, graphic artists worked hand in hand with authors to not only fill gaps in audience understanding but also expand and deepen the meaning of these marvels,” the book description states.

The Marion L. Brittain Postdoctoral Fellowship is administered by the Writing and Communication Program in LMC. It offers an opportunity for emerging scholars to develop innovative teaching and scholarship in writing and communication in their role as faculty members.
