This year, the School of History and Sociology is proud to recognize four exceptional students and recent graduates with the 2022 Bellon Award and the 2020–2021 HSOC Chair's Award.
This year's Bellon Award winners are Yihua Xu and Katie Marchese.
The Bellon Award is the highest honor that the School of History and Sociology bestows on current HTS majors. It is given annually in memory of the late professor Bernard P. Bellon to recognize HTS students who have distinguished themselves in the areas of academic achievement, leadership, research, and personal integrity. This award comes with a $1,000 prize.
Yihua Xu was nominated by Assistant Professor Allen Hyde. The School of History and Sociology Undergraduate Committee writes:
Yihua's unique interdisciplinary training and research experiences that blend both applied and computational mathematics alongside extensive research in quantitative social science, especially in areas of inequality and justice, certainly set him apart from other students. His leadership as an educator in a wide range of courses and participation as an IAC Student Ambassador demonstrate his commitment as a leader. Finally, his academic success as a double major in HTS and Mathematics, as well as a minor in Computational Data Analysis, is impressive and extraordinary. Congratulations, Yihua. You exemplify the qualities worthy of this award, and we see you as the type of student who will be a leader in carving the terrain of interdisciplinary excellence in future research initiatives.
Katie Marchese was nominated by Associate Professor Jennifer Singh. The School of History and Sociology Undergraduate Committee writes:
Katie's unique interdisciplinary training and research experiences that blend history, sociology, and public policy on timely issues like HIV testing and PrEP usage is compelling. Her leadership in HTS as President and Vice President of the History and Sociology Society and student representative in the HSOC Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, along with other positions across campus demonstrate her commitment as a leader. Finally, her academic success as a double major in HTS and Public Policy is impressive. Congratulations, Katie, you exemplify the qualities worthy of this award, and we see you as the type of student who will be a leader in carving the terrain of interdisciplinary excellence in future research initiatives.
This year's 2020 - 2021 HSOC Chair's Award winners are Haley Theis and Katherine Clowse.
HSOC presents the Chair's Award annually to the HTS major who wrote the best research paper during the previous academic year. This award comes with a $250 prize.
Haley was nominated by Assistant Professor Kelley Fong for her research paper The Well-Being of Children: A Rural Community's Perspective, written in the Seminar in Sociology and Welfare Policy. The HSOC Undergraduate Committee notes that they were especially impressed by Haley's analysis of the social institutions that shape child well-being in rural Georgia and the interviews she conducted with local community members who work with children in various capacities.

Katherine was nominated by Professor Eric Schatzberg for her research paper The Perception of Psychosurgery in the Media and Public, written in the Seminar in History of Technology. The HSOC Undergraduate Committee notes that they were especially impressed with Katherine's analysis of the rise and fall of the lobotomy in medicine and popular culture using newspaper accounts as her primary data.
