Focused on topics like graph theory, algorithms, discrete optimization \u0026mdash; and the interplay between the three \u0026mdash; the program has deeply embraced its multidisciplinary nature,\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/aco.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003Eessentially eliminating\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u0026ldquo;the traditional walls that usually separate academic units\u0026rdquo; by encouraging faculty members to advise students regardless of departmental affiliation.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EACO \u0026ldquo;brings together three disciplines that are fundamentally related,\u0026rdquo; Vempala explains. \u0026ldquo;Its course structure enables students to understand phenomena from all three perspectives and learn to use tools from all of them.\u0026rdquo;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EVempala has been involved with the ACO program since he joined the Georgia Tech faculty in 2006, advising many students in ACO, as well as serving on committees within the program.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;Professor Vempala\u0026#39;s experience at Georgia Tech, including his prior service as associate director of the ACO program, means that he is uniquely qualified to serve as director,\u0026rdquo; shares\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cos.gatech.edu\/our-leadership\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EDavid Collard\u003C\/a\u003E, professor in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/chemistry.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003ESchool of Chemistry and Biochemistry\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and senior associate dean in the College of Sciences. \u0026ldquo;The program is highly regarded nationally and internationally. I look forward to its continued success under professor Vempala\u0026#39;s leadership.\u0026quot;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EMeet Santosh Vempala\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EVempala received his Ph.D. in Algorithms, Combinatorics, and Optimization at Carnegie Mellon University before spending a year as a Miller Fellow at University of California, Berkeley and a decade as a professor of mathematics at the\u0026nbsp;Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Upon joining the faculty at Georgia Tech, Vempala served as the founding director of Tech\u0026rsquo;s\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/arc.gatech.edu\/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EAlgorithms and Randomness Center\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;He is a fellow of both the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.acm.org\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EAssociation for Computing Machinery\u003C\/a\u003E and the \u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.ams.org\/home\/page\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022\u003EAmerican Mathematical Society\u003C\/a\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDescribing his research as \u0026ldquo;studying the nature of computation, and its limits,\u0026rdquo; Vempala\u0026rsquo;s work ranges from theoretical to applied.
