{"65544":{"#nid":"65544","#data":{"type":"event","title":"Social Biology of Insects - IBB Breakfast Club Seminar Series","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EIBB Breakfast Club Seminar Series\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EMichael Goodisman, PhD\u003C\/strong\u003E - Associate Professor, School of Biology\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003E\u0022Social Biology of Insects\u0022\u003C\/em\u003E\u003Cem\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EAbstract\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003EBiological complexity has increased through a series of major evolutionary transitions.\u0026nbsp; One of the most recent transitions occurred when individually reproducing organisms came together to form integrated social groups.\u0026nbsp; The transition to sociality is best exemplified by the social insects, such as ants, social bees, social wasps, and termites.\u0026nbsp; Social insects have been ranked as \u2018among the greatest achievements of organic evolution\u2019 because of the extraordinary levels of cooperation.\u0026nbsp; In addition, social insects have been extremely successful ecologically.\u0026nbsp; In this presentation, I will introduce the life history strategies and evolutionary significance of social insects.\u0026nbsp; I will then discuss aspects of research within my group aimed at understanding the molecular basis underlying sociality, the nature of selection in social systems, the breeding biology of social animals, and the process of self-organization in social groups.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\u003Cp\u003EThe IBB Breakfast Club seminar series was started with the spirit of the Institute\u0027s interdisciplinary mission in mind. The goal of the seminar series is to highlight research taking place throughout the institute to enable the IBB community to further collaborative opportunities and interdisciplinary research. Faculty are often asked to speak at other universities and conferences, but rarely present at their home institution, this seminar series is an attempt to close that gap.
