Beaudin says. \u0026ldquo;We are raising awareness about the impacts of marine heatwaves, and what can we do to protect biodiversity, which is crucial for humans.\u0026rdquo;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.marineheatwaves.org\/\u0022\u003EMarine Heatwave International Working Group\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;(MHIWG) says a marine heatwave is\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.marineheatwaves.org\/all-about-mhws.html\u0022\u003Edefined\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;when seawater temperatures exceed a seasonally varying threshold for at least 5 consecutive days.\u0026nbsp;MHIWG says the warming of the world\u0026rsquo;s oceans since 1880 has contributed to an increase in marine heatwaves.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFor Beaudin, the trip was also a special opportunity to practice science communications, since she not only made a presentation to an\u0026nbsp;Expo audience, but also interacted with a group of teenagers who joined her on stage for a Q\u0026amp;A session.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026ldquo;It was my first time giving such a talk in front of the non-scientific community and some political representatives,\u0026rdquo; Beaudin says. \u0026ldquo;This project was meant for teenagers to get involved in science, but also to communicate this science to the non-scientific community.\u0026quot;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u0026quot;I really enjoyed interacting with the teens,\u0026quot; she adds. \u0026quot;They had smart questions and smart comments. There\u0026rsquo;s a bright future for them for sure. One of them was interested in joining the aerospace engineering program at Georgia Tech, so I think it was nice for him to meet people who attend his \u0026lsquo;dream\u0026rsquo; school.
