{"65381":{"#nid":"65381","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Students bring first TED event to Tech","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003EIn the name of disseminating\nideas and innovation, Georgia Tech students are organizing the Institute\u2019s\nfirst TEDx event. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ETED (technology, entertainment\nand design) is a national conference series devoted to the concept of \u201cideas\nworth spreading.\u201d It draws those who position themselves on the forefront of\ninnovation to speak at its annual conference, then makes the talks available\nfree online at \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/ted.com\/\u0022\u003ETED.com\u003C\/a\u003E. Past TED speakers include Bill Gates, Jane Goodall,\nMalcolm Gladwell, Larry Page, Sergey Brin and Bill Clinton. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EThe TEDx program is designed to\nbring the TED experience to local communities and enable them to organize\nevents that emulate the larger-scale conferences. \u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ESharad Gopal, an undergraduate\nindustrial engineering student, has wanted to host TEDx at Tech for two\nsemesters. He attended TEDxPeachtree last fall and feels that Tech is a place\nwith ideas worth spreading.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cTEDx creates a platform for\ninnovators and creators around the community. It gets those people on stage and\nmore people exposed to their ideas,\u201d Gopal said. \u201cTEDx lets us showcase the\npeople behind the work and learn more about innovations happening around Tech.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ERonald Arkin, a Regents\u2019\nProfessor in Georgia Tech\u2019s School of Interactive Computing, said he\u2019s honored\nto have the opportunity to give his talk, \u201cEthics and Lethality in Autonomous\nCombat Robots,\u201d at the inaugural TEDx event on campus.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003E\u201cThe challenge here is to do it\nin 18 minutes and for a potentially very diverse audience,\u201d he said. \u201cI have a\nlot to share, so hopefully it will get people thinking about some really hard\nproblems with emerging technology.\u201d\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ETEDx hosts must apply for\nlicenses from TED for their events and are issued guidelines for sponsorships,\nattendance and other logistics. Hosts are also granted access to a private\nonline wiki with resources for organizing the event, designing logos, creating\nbudgets and setting up stages. TED requires all talks be posted to \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/ted\u0022\u003Eits YouTube channel\u003C\/a\u003E after the event.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003EFirst-time hosts are more restricted\nin attendance numbers; Gopal is hopeful this first event will be successful so\nthat more can be held in the future and more members of the community can attend.\n\u003C\/p\u003E\n\n\u003Cp\u003ETEDxGeorgiaTech will be held\nSaturday, April 9, in the Clary Theater in the Bill Moore Student Success\nCenter. Registration is $10 for Tech students; $20 for all faculty, staff,\nalumni and postdoctoral fellows; and $25 for others.
