Abstract: The goal of this project is to contribute to communication and interactions that bring about peace and mutual understanding through intercultural communicative competence. To pursue this goal, we propose to leverage the case study method in the foreign language classroom. In this talk we present our approaches to and achievements in the two target areas of our project: (1) community engagement by offering a workshop on case studies as pedagogical method and (2) educational impact by implementing a case study in the foreign language classroom. Survey data from workshop participants revealed that foreign language instructors value case studies but there is need for more material. Students reported changes of perspectives and better understanding of the complexity of real-life dilemmas through the case study – crucial skills to foster peaceful intercultural communication and relationships.
