{"651921":{"#nid":"651921","#data":{"type":"news","title":"Global Atlanta features AGSC\u2019s new faculty co-director, Dr. Juan Carlos Rodriguez","body":[{"value":"\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.globalatlanta.com\/new-co-director-named-for-global-studies-center\/?mc_cid=ea9aa1b0d5\u0026amp;mc_eid=23f61f5a2f\u0022\u003EOriginally published in Global Atlanta by Trevor Williams on Oct 20, 2021.\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EGeorgia Tech\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;associate\u0026nbsp;professor of Spanish\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EJuan Carlos Rodriguez\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;has taken up the role as faculty co-director of the\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/atlantaglobalstudies.gatech.edu\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAtlanta\u0026nbsp;Global Studies Center\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, an interdisciplinary center focused\u0026nbsp;helping\u0026nbsp;improve language learning and cultural competency in metro-area students.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EGeorgia Tech and\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EGeorgia State University\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026nbsp;jointly\u0026nbsp;run the center, which is funded through a Title VI\u0026nbsp;National Resource\u0026nbsp;Center grant and aims to\u0026nbsp;better connect the international education realm with\u0026nbsp;the city\u0026rsquo;s\u0026nbsp;cultural and economic life.\u0026nbsp;\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EDr. Rodriguez will serve a three-year term, replacing the recently departed\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/www.globalatlanta.com\/georgia-state-and-georgia-tech-receive-2-5-million-grant-for-atlanta-global-studies-center\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003EAnna Stenport\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E\u0026nbsp;and joining\u0026nbsp;\u003Ca href=\u0022https:\/\/cas.gsu.edu\/profile\/lemieux\/\u0022\u003E\u003Cstrong\u003ETony Lemieux\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003C\/a\u003E, who serves as co-director on the\u0026nbsp;Georgia State side.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EAn award-winning poet who got his academic start in\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EPuerto Rico\u003C\/strong\u003E, Dr. Rodriguez has taught in the\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003EIvan Allen\u0026nbsp;College of Liberal Arts\u003C\/strong\u003E\u0026rsquo;s School of Modern Languages since 2008,\u0026nbsp;joining\u0026nbsp;from\u0026nbsp;\u003Cstrong\u003ERice\u0026nbsp;University\u003C\/strong\u003E, where he served as a lecturer. Primarily a film scholar, his\u0026nbsp;research\u0026nbsp;focuses on urban issues in\u0026nbsp;contemporary Latin\u0026nbsp;American cities as shown through documentaries, and he has edited two books on the\u0026nbsp;subject of media and culture in the region.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn his new role, he will work to boost awareness of global studies in the metro Atlanta region, improve language learning with partner institutions and develop and encourage programming and scholarship on international issues. Already he has worked extensively with the center, serving on the Foreign Language and Area Studies grants faculty committee, helping drive the Global Media Festival and speaking at the center\u0026rsquo;s events and its annual symposium.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThose involved with the Atlanta\u0026nbsp;Global Studies Center say it has been a strong force\u0026nbsp;for unification in a metro-area higher education community replete\u0026nbsp;with innovative projects but sometimes short on cohesion.
