The 15 titles selected for the NEA Big Read represent a diverse range of contemporary themes, voices, and perspectives, according to the organization.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EShort descriptions for each of the featured books are available on the \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/arts.gov\/neabigread\u0022\u003ENEA Big Read website\u003C\/a\u003E, with additional resources for the new titles to be published in summer 2022.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003E\u003Cem\u003EDeaf Republic\u003C\/em\u003E follows the lives of ordinary citizens living in an occupied country who go deaf the moment a boy with a hearing impairment is shot and killed by soldiers. It was inspired by Kaminsky\u0026rsquo;s own experience of navigating his youth in the Soviet Union as a person living with hearing impairment.\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EKaminsky was named a finalist for the 2019 National Book Award for \u003Cem\u003EDeaf Republic.\u003C\/em\u003E\u003C\/p\u003E\r\n\r\n\u003Cp\u003EThe book also was named as a Notable Book by \u003Cem\u003EThe New York Times\u003C\/em\u003E for 2019.
